Widespread ignorance of history is the reason for the PC's general misimpression that the Confederate flag is about racism, and that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves. In fact, its cause was more about lack of common cultural bonds between North and South, and disparate economic interests such as free trade. South had greater ties to Europe and wanted low tariffs, because it was an importer/exporter, while North wanted high tariffs to protect its fledgling industry. Lincoln had no great love for slaves. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation two years into that war, not as some compassionate act toward the slaves, but as a tactical move. England had abolished slavery earlier, and he counted on strong abolitionist sentiment in that country to prevent its coming into the war on the side of the Confederacy, to which it had close ties. My belief is that the people who adorn their cars/trucks with that symbol now, here in the North and elsewhere, are more about making an anti-establishment statement than expressing bigotry.
Excellent post, the true cause of the civil war is all but forgotten. Most now believe it was only slavery that brought it about. That is like saying WW2 was fought because the nazi's were killing jews.
I saw this written somewhere... The Stars and Bars with a caption beneath, "It's a Southern thing and you just wouldn't understand".
Labeling all who display that flag as racist indicates that many people just don't understand.
AGREE! The Confederate Flag is a testimony to the many Southern veterans who served the Confederacy in our Civil War.It is a part of history and should remain as a symbol of a Proud South. It is based on St Andrews Cross and the stars and bars represent those southern states in the Confederacy.Unfortunately, like many other symbols it has been turned into an untouchable by politicians who fear a Black backlash. It has nothing to do with racial hatred like the KKK,Swastika or JDL.I fear the South will not rise again to protect its proud history, look at Vanderbilt not keeping the name Confederate Hall.Persh, you should organize a Vandy alumni group to preserve southern history!
