unless it's a Glock or some low cost mass production piece of #$%$. I went to four gun stores today and found that everyone was out of stock of most everything except for the odd ball stuff like 44 magnum revolvers or Glocks or the cheap stuff most people don't want. Forget assault rifles. I have no interest in these but noticed that all the assault rifle wall displays were empty, not even one, and they won't even take orders as the manufactures are out of stock and way behind on orders. I was looking for a Sig Sauer P226 Equinox .40 caliber (E26R-40-EQ) and they have been sold out for 3 weeks and won't take orders because the distributors are unwilling to quote delivery times. Recent demand has overwhelmed the manufacturers. I have 4 online web gun suppliers set up to give me an email alert if they can get the gun I want but I have assumed that none of them will pan out. I did it as a long shot. I'm willing to pay the $125 FFL transfer cost and sales taxes in two states to have it sent to me but that's not even an option so it seems. I've never seen anything like this.
My old S&W semi-auto was made before they started putting mounting rails on guns for laser sights and comparing the accuracy of a gun with a laser sight to one that does not have a laser sight is like comparing a conventional gun to a bow and arrow.
But if you like Glocks then go for it. Everyone had Glocks. My standards for accuracy are a bit higher than that. But then if all you care about is a gun you can drag through the mud and it will still fire without jamming then the Glock is your gun.
The nice thing about a laser sight is you can target practice without using ammunition by dry firing and observing the jerk pattern on the target. It saves a lot of money. First you dry fire until you get your trigger pull technique honed and then you use ammunition to verify the laser adjustments and confirm your dry firing practice. You can do with 25 rounds what used to take 100 rounds. After all, most of target practice is getting rid of your trigger jerk and learning now much to compensate for what you see through the sight and where the bullet actually hits and the laser pretty much eliminates the latter issue altogether.
doesn't matter. years ago, i had a friend who did not want to carry concealed. he wanted a full size .45 revolver with a 15 inch barrel in a hip holster. that way everybody would know that he was armed. even if it would take half a minute to draw.
my position is much more conservative. anybody can have as many guns of any type that they want and can carry, provided they were available when the second amendment was written. they even had rifled barrels then. max rate of fire for a Kentucky Long Rifle was about 2 rounds per minute due to the tight fit of ball to barrel. lots less damage volume, but very accurate.
Strange thing is that after finding a good way to carry, it just goes away. Hardly know it's there. All the things about home defense applys to on the street, except the risk of finding a police officer that objects to civil carry. Have had a ccw for over 15 yrs, and am confortable with the responsibility. With nearly 900k permits issued in this state, I am obviously not alone.
I work part-time at a gunstore here in Houston, Texas. I get asked one question a lot, why do you want to own an AR-15? What is the purpose of owning an AR-15? What sporting purposes does a AR-15 have?
My only answers to that question are simple...
1. For protecting my home and my family.
2. For hunting and harvesting wild game (wild hogs and deer).
3. For shooting at the gun range, it is fun. You should try it.
I'm not a criminal, I'm not a gang member, I'm not a drug dealer...I'm just a regular American citizen. AR-15 are very accurate and in fact they do have a sporting purpose, there are national matches that are sponsored by sporting good companies and where people compete with match grade competition AR-15's.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
You are a gang member. You think guns are fun, that makes you part of that gang. There's no need for you to hunt for food, you do it because you like killing things and you like doing it with completely unnecessarily powerful weapons, so you're part of that gang, too. "Sporting" is another word for "playing" which means you consider your guns toys. Toys designed specifically to kill people in quantity at extended range. Check with your psychiatrist, he'll agree with me that you're not right in the head.
There are millions of very responsible gun owners. A vast majority I'm sure. All this follows a trend of losing privileges over decades because of bad apples. Amazing how few bad apples it takes to create an uproar. Think back. I'll give you a major tradition that was destroyed by a few bad apples....Halloween. How about buying cold remedies that contain meth cooking ingredients? How about the prescription pill abusers that make it hard for the rest of us to get the prescriptions we really need? How about people who hide bombs in their shoes? You see my point. It's sincerely sad a responsible majority has to suffer from the actions of relatively few, but that is the new order of the world we now live in.
What stops some nutjob from leveling an AR-15 on you in a crowded venue? Someone that picked it up at a gun show with no background checks performed. Or someone that even got it legally because they could pass the superficial background checks. My push is to get guns like those LICENSED. A much more thorough background EXAM that would have to be passed in all phases before a license to own one of these particular types of weapons would be granted. The difficulty in attaining this license should be no less than the requirements for attaining a license to use explosives. But to me the "practicality" of owning an assualt weapon in particular has a much narrower corridor of justification IN TODAYS WORLD.
Don't let anyone try to belittle or shame you out of something that you want to do.
It is a free country and you have the right to own a firearm and defend yourself.
YBF lives in a fantasy world. There is never any crime, the economy will never collapse, everyone on wefare and food stamps truely needs it and anyone who does not think like him is a fool.
I own a S&W M&P 9mm full size., and a Mossberg 500 12gauge shot gun.
I have no intent on carrying. Strictly insurance policy if the SHTF.
I have taken NRA weapon safty classes ( with my son)
I would only shoot someone if in my home and if I reasonably assumed that that person was going to use deadly force on me or my family. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
That is not a crime, and its not foolish. And nobody, including YBF, can make me think it is.
Ray ! I have a Sig 220 and 226 that are excellect but heavy for conceled carry. I plan to buy a Snub nose 38 Special with enclosed hammer and dehorned for pocket holster carry. A S&W or Ruger that the custom shop has cleaned up. The small light weapon that is easy to carry is better than the one you left at home if needed.
I don't ever plan to carry a concealed weapon. When I go to the firing range I leave my bullets at home and buy the reloads that they sell at the range and the unloaded gun is in the storage box in which it came in when I purchased it. I do this for practical reasons since if I get pulled over and they find a registered gun in the car, they can only make an issue of it if bullets can be quickly put into it. If there are no bullets and thus it cannot be used as a weapon then there is no possible way one can be charged with a crime even if the police officer is not rational. This may be over kill because I have not been stopped by a police officer in over 30 years as I don't break traffic laws but you can never be too careful. I'm the guy that everyone gets #$%$ off at because I drive too conservatively.
However I keep my guns loaded at home and concealed in a drawer next to the bed. My wife has a different gun next to her side in case she awakes and I don't.
I have been robbed at gun point twice, once when I was in a friends apartment and two guys came in with guns in hand and we were caught off guard. About a year latter a different set of guys came to the same apartment but this time he had a 44 magnum and one of the two ended up going to jail but the other one got away. When he saw the diameter of the bore of the 44 magnum they took off running, both in different directions. So it was not possible to catch them both. I came out when I heard him yelling frantically to stop one of the guys who ran into the court yard where a lot of apartment doors had access but I was on the second floor. About 5 other people who were on the first floor came out of their apartments and tackled him and they held him until the police came. Two of them were OSU football players who happened to live in our apartment complex so they were well suited for the task.
Now I no longer assume that when someone knocks on the door that the person on the other side is friendly. My guns are for home defense only and target practice. I have no need for a concealed weapon as I have never encountered a situation when someone has tried to rob me when I am in public. They seem to prefer to come to your home and do it there in private behind closed doors. At least that is what has happened to me. For those who want to remain unarmed. Good luck with that. All I can say was that the in the first robbery when they told us all to get in the bath room I can remember as they led us back there that all of us were looking at each other with that knowing look that we all understood that we were thinking that this was it, that they were going to kill us. We were horrified for a moment until they closed the door and ran off.
I will never allow myself to be in that situation again as the stories I have heard of others since then is that they did try to kill them so there would be no witnesses. They even openly talked about disposing the witnesses in front of them which was what got them to stop being passive and create a situation which caused the robbers to run off before they had a chance to killed them and they ended up with nonlethal wounds but are still alive, obviously, or how else would they tell their story. All these people how have home defense weapons. I don't know of very many people who have actually been robbed at gun point in their homes who don't. It's a wakeup call that most don't ignore. Reality sucks. But it is what it is. Ignore it at your own risk.
My wife once had someone try to break in who apparently wanted to rape her. After that she bought a 12 gage shot gun that almost knocks her over when she shoots it. I convinced her that a shot gun was a little extreme and that a hand gun would be adequate. We got rid of the shot gun. At least if you have to shoot someone with a hand gun there is a good chance they will live. Also you don't use up your bullets so fast.
""I plan to buy a Snub nose 38 Special with enclosed hammer and dehorned for pocket holster carry""
I have this gun, in the S&W stainless, 5 shot revolver, 2 inch, 1lb loaded, no safety, carried in a front pocket, loose pants slip in holster, and I carry a concealed weapon permit. I carry it, Ray85, when I go downtown at night to the symphony with my wife. Bad part of town, if you know what I mean. Plain clothes police officer knifed up badly by a homeless dude a few years back in the same block.
I am very aware of my surroundings. If approached we move, if followed, we run, if attack imminent, and bodily injury probable, I would draw my weapon and attempt to kill the attacker. There is none of the, "shoot him in the foot to slow him down", mentality in my vocabulary. You maybe, if lucky, get one shot, and I will take it, if, God forbid, my life or those I am with are threatened.
It is against the law for civilians to own fully automatic weapons, bazookas, and rocket launchers. This means that there are some weapons that civilians shouldn’t own, and that laws prohibiting those weapons are not an infringement of the Second Amendment. Fully automatic weapons, bazookas, and rocket launchers did not existed when the Constitution was written, yet laws were passed after these weapons were created to protect the population at large from the wrong kinds of people owning them.
Raising the question about prohibiting assault weapons with large magazine loads is not an issue of infringement of the Second Amendment. It is a question of should these weapons be included on the existing list of weapons that should not be owned by civilians. The laws and courts of our land has already determined that the Second Amendment right does not include every existing weapon and future weapons to be developed. It’s not a Second Amendment rights question, it a question of the merits and demerits of citizens owning such weapons.
Carrying a weapon is a big responsibility. More than most anything in the world i hate to hand over money to lawyers. I would accept a robbery or minor injury in order not to kill someone. If you make a error in judgement in A District attorney's opinion,it will cost you to defend yourself in court. Also Civil Suits, every gang banger has a Mother and relatives with hungry lawyers that will suit you for your last dime. Defending your family is very different than defending self. I would risk all to defend family but would accept injury to avoid spending every last cent to defend myself in court.
Going into a bad/strange section of town at night is the height of stupidity in my opinion.
Doc !! You sound a little like George Zimmerman before he learned of the real world. Also be aware that what you post on the Internet will be discovered and used against you. What you post will be twisted and framed in a way to put you a negative light to a jury of the victims peers as well as yours.
Who are you going to shoot?
And don't tell me nobody. Everyone thinks about needing to shoot someone when buying a gun. Otherwise why buy one?
And don't tell me to shoot targets. Laser sights are illegal in target matches, and plinking is for #$%$ #$%$.
Seems like a lot of money to spend on a paranoid fantasy.
You must not live in a the real urban world. This is from a retired Detroit P.D. and if you think that when you or your family are in a real spot that you're going to call and a Cop and they are going to get there in time to save you're #$%$ you are way above naive, this world is broken with violence and self protection is the" ONLY" answer.
