It's preferable. You don't get the qualified-dividend tax break, so you get a little more of the usual benefit holding this in an IRA vs. a taxable account. It's fricken' awesome in a Roth, too.
Will work in taxable or tax deferred account. Only advantage in IRA is to defer the income. The REIT Distribution are not Qualifies for the 15% rate. A Capital loss would not be tax deductible in a IRA. Have it your way or either way.
