savy person.. In horizontal drilling how far away from the drilling station does the drill generally reach out laterally ? Say on a section of land can a station reach the whole section or just out a few hundred feet. Thanks
World Record: Longest measured depth extended-reach drilling of 37,016 of TMD
Date Set: April 2007
BPs Wytch Farm project has several offshore laterals reaching over six miles.
It is quite common in the Williston Basin for drilling companies to drill down a mile, then drill horizontally for 2 miles. Whiting was instrumental in developing some of the longer laterals and have gotten very prolific results from doing so.
It is not uncommon for lateral (horizontal) lengths to exceed 6000'. I believe in the Bakken there are instances of more than 7500'.
This number is increasing nearly daily.
It seems the limiting factors are regulatory in nature, ie, the size of a producing "unit"
