Microsoft, Adobe Could Partner On Mobile, Cloud BusinessesLast update: 10/8/2010 3:31:06 PM

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--The reported visit by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to the headquarters of Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) spurred takeover talk, but the more likely result could be increased collaboration between the two companies, especially in the hot areas of cloud and mobile computing. For example, analysts said, Microsoft could help drive the adoption of Adobe Systems' Flash on mobile devices such as phones and tablets, while Adobe could help drive business for Azure, Microsoft's cloud-computing development platform and service. "We believe the most likely outcome of any potential deal between Microsoft and Adobe would be a tighter integration of Flash into the Microsoft platform," Barclays Capital analyst Israel Hernandez said. "In our view, an acquisition of Adobe seems unlikely." Adobe shares surged 12% Thursday following a New York Times article that said Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen recently met with Ballmer. The report suggested that Microsoft was thinking of buying Adobe to help it compete with the growing influence of Apple Inc. (AAPL) and its mobile iPhone and iPad devices. However, people familiar with the matter have downplayed the significance of the meeting. Adobe spokeswoman Holly Campbell said, "Adobe and Microsoft share millions of customers around the world and the CEOs of the two companies do meet from time to time."
