Earnings up 20% and forecasting a 17% revenue increase in Q2 vs. Q1. This shows that things are fine with some companies; especially those in Taiwan............where HIMX is headquartered.
Face it, Obama and Obamacare has forced so much overhead costs and uncertainty onto the USA business and consumer environment that the economy is stagnated; even with very low interest rates. But, things are still cooking as best they can without the USA in Asia and especially Taiwan.
I expect HIMX to announce inline or slightly upbeat earnings but to forecast good growth going forward. And, for those who read the transcript of the 4Q 2012 conference call will realize that they have already projected that. As such, HIMX just needs to reaffirm what they said previously.
HIMX is in a growth market (display drivers for Smartphones, tablets, laptops, TV, etc.) and then new markets such as head mounted displays and probably iWatches, etc. And, these are not just being offered by Google and Apple respectively but Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony, etc. who are all listed as customers of HIMX.
In summary, the good earnings and outlook of TSM bodes well for HIMX and a much better indicator of their business environment and outlook than INTC, MSFT, etc.
Finally, we are only 3 months from receiving our annual July dividend............which should be announced 2 months from now in mid-June.
SanDisk also reported much better than expected revenue and earnings and guided higher for 2Q 2013. As SanDisk sells Solid State Drives and NAND memory, they are a good indicator of Smart Phones and Tablets than the Intels and Microsofts of the world.
Note that 1Q is always weaker than 4Q due to seasonality factors and the 1 week Chinese New Years. As such, the 1Q 2013 should be compared to 1Q 2012 and not 4Q 2012.
From the Zacks Article:
SanDisk Corp. (SNDK) reported first-quarter 2013 adjusted earnings of 78 cents per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 70 cents. ...Results also came 35.5% higher than the year-ago period but were 21.3% below the prior quarter level.
The beat was mainly attributable to strong solid state drive (SSD) sales and strength in retail businesses and favorable supply/demand metrics.
Total revenue for the first quarter was $1.34 billion, up 11.2% on a year-over-year basis but down 13.0% from the previous quarter. The quarter’s result surpassed both the company's guidance as well as the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.32 billion. The year-over-year revenue improvement was mainly due to strong performances in both the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and Retail verticals.
Taiwan high tech stocks like TSM, SIMO and IMOS did well yesterday. HIMX seemed a bit manipulated (trading designed to take down). But, long term HIMX is well. Google talked about Google Glasses development with many developers. Apple is developing their iWatch along with Samsung. Microsoft and Sony are working on Augmented Reality (AR) headmounted devices for their gaming devices. HIMX will do very well long term.
HIMX also did $737 million in sales in 2012 and earned $0.30/share. 2014 earnings are estimated at over $0.52/share on over $1 billion in sales.
TSM is up over 6% on a down NASDAQ day. HIMX has had many up days and will have many more to come. Soon people will realize that Taiwan means growth and good profits.
Again, if you want to sell, you should be selling covered calls as that will make sellers more money. I suspect today's selling is either MM's trying to get shares for the next up leg (which they know have been very strong) or to cover shorts where they tried to profit but couldn't push HIMX down.
Someone selling their shares would not be throwing big blocks at the bid to drive it down. They would sell into an upmarket which they had earlier. As I am an investor, I will be holding until at least the dividend in July (and as I don't want to pay 40% short term capital gains taxes).
