belviq patient handout from doctor vig

here is my patient handout for belviq...part one.... steven vig md
BELVIQ IS A PILL TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT (patient information)
BELVIQ (lorcaserin) is a 5HT2C serotonin receptor agonist that works in the hypothalamus area in the brain to decrease appetite and help you lose weight. Belviq does not raise your blood pressure or your heart rate. Belviq was approved by the FDA in 2012 and will be available in pharmacies in the United States in March, 2013. Belviq is a prescription medicine from Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai. Belviq is given as one 10mg pill twice a day, with or without food. Along with diet and exercise, Belviq is indicated for weight loss in obese patients (Body Mass Index of 30 or higher). Belviq is also indicated for weight loss in overweight patients (Body Mass Index of 27 to 30) who have weight related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. The most common clinical side effect was headache, which was seen in 16.8% of patients compared to 10.1 % of patients on placebo. The headache was mild and tended to go away in a few days, even when Belviq was continued. Belviq will be a schedule IV drug, which would be the same as the sleeping pill temazepam. Your doctor may need to obtain prior authorization from your medical insurance to get approval for you to use Belviq. You should see your doctor 12 weeks after starting Belviq to be sure that the drug is working for you, and that you have lost at least 5% of your body weight in the first 12 weeks on Belviq. For example, a 200 pound person should lose at least 10 pounds in 12 weeks, and a 260 pound person should lose at least 13 pounds in 12 weeks.
