...if the Beacon Flywheel system is impervious to Electro Magnetic Pulses? If so, I would think that besides the cost savings and pollution reduction, it would be a national security issue to get them online asap.
The stored kinetic energy should be impervious - EMP would not affect dead weight in motion. What could be affected is lines and electronics leading to/from the pods, plus control singalling components. These would need to be EMP shielded in order for the stored electronic energy to be actually used. Don't see how flywheels could be used as an element in EMP tolerant system or micro-grid except as short term UPS until backup generators would kick on.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to convey that I thought it could solve an emp issue, just know that the govt is taking steps to fix that problem, and if Beacon ended up being a weak link, they'd have to address it before they went forward.
Yeah, I understand that the weakest link of the chain can bring everything down, I'm just wondering if the flywheel itself was designed so that it wouldn't be affected. Therefore, when other companies get their EMP acts together, Beacon won't be the weak link.
