The reason most often given is that "that's the system requirement", but the requirement is often over-ridden. Since other pharmacies don't have the requirement, it isn't needed and is merely a blatant invasion of the customer's privacy rights.
Not sure what your problem is. I get all my scripts at CVS, and I'm never asked for my DOB unless it's a tech who doesn't know me. I've always assumed they ask just to make sure they get the right person's scripts, since my last name is very common. In fact, when asked I just give them the month/day, assuming that's enough for them to find the right one. Never been asked for more.
