    Susan McDougal Jail Book

Did anyone see a Susan McDougal interview? She is the friend of Clinton who was jailed for refusing to talk. Now she is on a book tour. Her jail experience was unbelievable. In a womans' prison a pregnant teen spent hours alone on her bunk screaming for help as she gave birth. No one ever came. I think the baby died.
Another pregnant woman was so sick that she could not walk. It was against the rules for anyone to have food brought to her, so she crawled to the food line. Guards refused to let others help her.
On another day the womans' section of the jail was attacked by fire ants. They ran to a common room, where they were given DDT and told to go back to their cells. Fortunately, they negotiated their way out of that one.
I do not know where this jail was or who owned it. I certainly hope it was not our company. But, most of all, This sounds like one of those Nazi death camps. How typical is this? Isn't there a law against this kind of treatment in America? I am simply astounded! What do those of you who work in prisons say?

    • You've got to remember who Susan McDougal is and question whether what she writes is true or not. I would assume that she is more interested in selling books than being completely truthful. I know a lot of people that exagerate (sp) for less reason than she has (sell books; make money.)

    • You can bet it wasn't a CCA prison - or any other private prison company, simply because if it were the State (or the Feds) would have fined it heavily or canceled the contract. Oh, and then patted itself on the back for doing it. The government never polices itself the way it does the private sector.

      • Many of the state agencies do prison audits. Most of the ones I have been a part of have been self serving. The very things we find non compliant in a private facility we pass over like it is no big deal in our own facilities. We will correct it in conversation only.We do this so we can tell our governing bodies we excede the standards of a private facility. But stories like this are becoming common place in the public sector and with the economy in the shape that it is. I feel that the private industry will see some healthy growth in the next four to five years. One last point, most of the independent studies show that privitization in partnership with a public department is a good thing. The private facilities meet or exceed their public agencies. This is true with Cxw and Whc anyway. Some of the smaller upstarts are where most of the bad press comes from. Cxw and Whc for the most part are reflective of their partners performance.
