Can the funds who participate in the Russell Funds sell? Or, are they locked into their investment as long as Insmed remains above market cap thresholds? Also, I believe they are just in the Russell 3000 and Russell Global??? What is the threshold for the Russell 2000?
As people buy and redeem shares in the index fund, the manager should be buying and selling all the component stocks proportionately. Only at rebalancing time should they sell all of their holdings of a component, if that component stock is being removed/replaced in the Russell Index.
Let me see if I understand exactly what you are saying, rising. If a fund wants to sell $1000 (or x%) of Insmed, they would have to sell $1000 (or x%) of every stock in their portfolio? And vice versa? But, they can do that at any time during the year? And, if that is true, if they sold too much between now and the June rebalancing, and if Insmed is still in the Russell, would they have to buy more to get back to the proper level? Sorry for any confusion on my part.
