On 1/7/13 I put equal amounts of money into KMP and ETP within 3 minutes of the first fill and directed Fidelity to reinvest distributions. Fidelity participates in ETP's discount drip program and buys as many shares of KMP in the open market as the drip dollars will buy 3 business days before the pay date, which is today. While Fidelity has not posted ETP's drip shares, I know exactly how many I will get since I know the discount reinvestment price.
So, using yesterday's closing price of 50.11 for etp and 88.54 for kmp and including units purchased with today's distribution, total return on ETP since 1/7 is 15.26% while total return on KMP for the same period is 6.80%.
The above takes into account differences in distribution yield, etp's 5% discount for dripping, and price change so it is theoretically perfect on a total return percentage basis.
