Oh my are we bitter? Now just think about it for a second. The only way a company makes money is to offer products or services that its customers are willing to pay for. It's a three legged stool. Customers, employees and owners. All three have to be satisfied for a company to flourish. If the customers aren't satisfied, they find another company to do business with. If the employees aren't satisfied, the customers will get inferior products or services and they walk again. If the owners aren't satisfied because their return on investment is unacceptable they don't reinvest in the business and it dies on the vine.
The challenge of the business manager is to try to keep all three entities balanced. If it becomes lopsided, rebalancing can be difficult on all concerned. At the end of the day, if the owners walk everybody is out of a job including the manager. It's easy for you to sit back and make generalized statements about "...companies not caring". When was the last time you questioned your loyalty and motivation to making your company successful? From your identity I'd surmise you're probably doing only as much as necessary to keep from getting fired. Or maybe not quite enough.
