So I guess 'The Wolverine' is coming out in a few weeks and it's not in IMAX. That kind of surprised me since I thought they'd do all those Marvel superhero movies. Oddly I haven't heard much buzz about the movie and they are showing it weeks after the July 4th holiday which is usually a great movie week. The only things coming out this week are Despicable Me 2 (which I'm sure will do great for the kiddies, but is not an IMAX kind of movie) and The Lone Ranger (which I can't see being a big hit and is only in IMAX in some international markets). Kind of strange to me.
Imax has never had any movies with X-Men characters. I guess Imax wanted to give Warner Bros.' Man of Steel the July 4th weekend. The only studio Imax has a special relationship with is Warner Bros. because Warner Bros. was the first studio to give DMR a chance. Disney and Universal held back for a very long time.
IMAX sticking with their strongest allies in Hollywood is one area where I applaud management, specifically Greg Foster who is most responsible for the "secret sauce" relationships that are strongly behind IMAX. A double edged sword but the consistency of support that this group has provided IMAX has certainly helped IMAX convince the other studios and the exhibitors worldwide that they are a force to be reckoned with.
