my only guess is that someone got a call after the close that MasterCard and Visa will be upgraded Monday - Visa was up 1% as well..if not that, then perhaps favorable legislation but nothing i knew of was on the hirizon
It is only 10K shares. So, not a big deal for MM to spend this chump change. Only news I could find is MA is increasing transaction cost by 20% in Canada. I think if MA and V both misuse their monopoly, their days are numbered. I see so many ppl paying with cash. If retailers start charging more if you use credit card, I think lot of ppl will move to debit or cash payments. I, e.g. never pay for gas with credit card because it costs more. Either I go to gas station that has same price for cash/credit or just pay with cash. With Elizabeth Warren's (I know she is senator now) pick of Consumer Protection Agency, I think they will put leash on these credit card companies soon esp. if they flex their muscles too much.
Your anecdotal report about yourself is an outlier. I work a service industry. We offer a 3% discount for paper (cash or credit) very few of our clients( since I have been tracking it - it is less than 5%) opt to save 3% when they make a purchase because they would lose their reward points or because they do not have that much cash. (most transactions are over $100)
It is all going plastic and we see less and less cash all the time.
