"can you sell on Jan 23 and still get the dividend? thanks"
It's very simple. On EX-DIV day, sellers get the dividend, buyers don't.
(And NO, you can't buy it tomorrow morning, sell in the afternoon & GET the dividend)
Some people insist there's a way to manipulate this system & get rich, they're wrong!!
If you buy 200 shares today at 16.00, you're cost basis (omitting commission) would be $3,200.00. Lets say it closes at 16.00. Tomorrow the price will be adjusted down .36 to account for the dividend. So tomorrow, the stock opens at 15.64
You're down $72.00 (more if you count commission) Of course the stock could go up, & you will receive the .36 per share div on jan 31st
Yes, if you bought today (Jan 22) you could sell tomorrow (Jan 23) and still receive the dividend.
I suggest you buy in early tomorrow after the PPS has been adjusted for the dividend payment (36 cents). CODI is running strong here and likely will recapture most of that difference in a week so you could end up with capital gains.
I sold some 1600 shares today at 6.15 and am holding another 1000. Might sell those if it reaches 16.20. I have buy orders in for 15.75 and 15.70 that I will adjust based on closing price.
