    Are Sonic's Management Gay?

Despite those attributes, national restaurant chains have been slow to pursue the demographic, citing fears of possible backlash from heterosexual customers or of being pigeonholed as a "gay" brand.

Illustrating that point, Sonic Drive-In recently launched a national ad campaign showing Pete and P.J.--two men whom many viewers have interpreted as a gay couple--bantering in an SUV outside of a Sonic Drive-In.

In late February the Kansas City Star published an advertising column that mentioned the campaign and later was inundated with e-mails and phone calls from readers who criticized the television spots.

"Every man who e-mailed was negative," says Jennifer Mann, the business reporter who writes the weekly column for the Kansas City, Mo., newspaper. "A lot of the responses were homophobic--men saying, 'Why do we want to see two gay guys bickering outside of a Sonic?'"

Sonic Industries Inc., the Oklahoma City-based franchisor and operator of the 2,900-unit Sonic Drive-In brand, declined comment for this article.
