US Total Beverage sales were +$51 million or +.06% in Q1
The leading growth categories in order were Energy, Bottled Water, RTD Coffee, Juice based, and Sports Drinks.
Declining categories were led by Carbonated Soft Drinks (CSD’s), Energy Shots, and RTD Tea based.
CSD’s were down 2% for the quarter representing a $56.5 million sales decrease.
The good news for PEP, KO, and DPS is that the total beverage pie grew, driven by categories where they have either a sizable or leading presence in the category….Water, Sports Drinks, RTD Coffee, and Juice based.
The bad news is that none of the big three CSD have a significant brand in the fastest growing category…Energy Drinks. All of the growth in the category came from Red Bull and Monster…combining for almost a 78% share of the category. Rockstar and AMP both lost volume and share for the Quarter.
The worst news for PEP, KO, and DPS is that the 8 year negative trend in CSD’s shows no sign of stopping. Consumers continue to move to alternative beverages.
