Smoldering probem for Diamond Foods due to its history
Diamond Foods was previously a farmers cooperative with simple accounting and low paid managment, an arrangement under which ALL profits were shared on a prorata basis amongst the growers /members.
Now it is a publicly traded company with bloated payroll management and no longer shares its profits with its farmer growers. Costs are higher, profit sharing is out the window and farmers no longer have a loyalty reason to market their products through Diamond Foods.
This is typical of cooperatives gone public and the pain does not usually end well for shareholders or farmers.
The best alternatives for Diamond:
Go back to a cooperative OR
Neither is probable in the near term.
