One thing that is often misunderstood is that the stock market itself doesn't create wealth. Whenever you buy or sell, someone else is on the other side of that transaction. The only way to create wealth - for some people - is to pump more money into the market. This can be done by taking your savings and investing them, or investing the dividends you receive, or taking a non-market investment like U.S. bonds and investing them in the market. Simply having the market go up doesn't do it 'cause, if you do take a gain, someone else paid for it.
