LONDON—Total SA is moving two rigs into position at its Elgin field in the North Sea and is likely to begin drilling a relief well within days to try to stop a natural-gas leak at the field, the company said Friday.
Nearly a week after the incident first occurred, gas is still leaking from a point some 4,000 meters (13,200 feet) below the seabed into a well bore that had previously been shut down. A sheen of gas condensate is visible on the surface of the sea around the leak and a potentially explosive gas cloud hangs around the wellhead .
