I have heard a lot about the new contract, but I am not able to find much of the details particulalry how much Express Scripts is going to pay Walgreen with year and overtime. Anybody has much of the knowledge. Administration was claiming this time last year that proposed payment was below their cost
you still need a pharmacist for an automated station but pharmacist could be sitting somewhere in the middle of nowhere and fill prescriptions for a 60 docs office building. For the benefit of WAG they they recently bought a local home infusion company here in Los Angeles. They will do antibiotics, TPN, and even chemotherapy. Revenue and profit may keep coming but not from retail.
The problem is there is the larger cloud at the horizon. Automated pharmacy dispensing units. Those have come down in price quite a lot. I write today about 80% of all prescriptions electronically. It is expected that by 2014 ALL Medi-Care prescriptions will be electronic and 95% of all not Medi-Care will be electronic. Here in California many large medical groups or hospitals/ACO will have their own pharmacy and patients will fill pick up prescriptions prior to leaving their doctor office builing or urgent care facility. All industry in trouble and WAG just happen to be the first one to come on the line
