    Creative Storage Conference Keynote Speaker Roy Taylor Delves Into VR

    Also unfolding is “an arms race” to higher resolution headsets, continued Taylor who manages AMD relations with Microsoft, Google, major games publishers and developers. In VR he heads up partnerships with film, broadcast, gaming, academia and industry as well with Oculus, HTC/Valve and others. Taylor related that Valve reportedly has one-third of its employees working in VR.

    AMD plans to enter into more such cooperative VR relationships, with those partnerships slated to be announced during the course of next month’s SIGGRAPH confab in Anaheim, Calif.

    Maybe the military and manufacturers like BAE and DRS are just being smart in their price negotiations putting pressure on eMagin to keep their prices low by pointing to KOPIN as an alternative if inferior supplier. This would be an obvious tactic as would giving some of the FWS to KOPIN to keep the pressure on.

Reducing silicon wafer costs have directly impacted microdisplay prices, which form a sizable percentage of the resultant HMD cost. As a result, declining microdisplay prices coupled with growing demand for wearable, lightweight devices are expected to be key driving forces for the HMD market. Defense services are a key contributor to global demand, wherein head mounted displays aid in security, imaging and tracking.

    Key companies operating in the market include eMagin Corporation, BAE Systems, Vuzix, Rockwell Collins and Seiko Epson. Major manufacturers have started developing products targeted at entertainment purposes; additionally, geographical expansion is expected to be a key growth strategy.

    2K x 2K is neither 2K (2k x !k) or 4K (4K x 2K) and falls between. I suggest they have just rounded up?
    No consumer device perhaps but why not an Industrial/Commercial version?

    During his keynote talk at today’s VR World Congress (VRWC) in Bristol, UK, AMD’s Roy Taylor revealed that the company has its own VR device in its labs. According to Taylor, the device supports 4K resolution per eye, easily beating that of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It also boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, again surpassing those two devices though matching the refresh rate of the 1080p display seen in the upcoming PlayStation VR. It’s not expected that this device will see a consumer release, instead being used for internal testing.

    Even with these additions, VR is far from perfect. Taylor noted that achieving 144 frames per second with 16K resolution per eye was the real goal for the tech, which is something fans likely won’t see for a very long time.

    As far as I know the evidence is circumstantial. Sculley has talked a number of times about such a system being in progress and Elbit is a longtime Emagin customer for military applications. (Google “Elbit OLED”)

    Sounds good but later says

    Who is making the headsets ?????

    Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2015 were $6.7 million, essentially flat with fourth quarter of 2014. Product revenues (primarily display sales) totaled $5.7 million, 1.3% more than fourth quarter last year. R&D contract revenues totaled approximately $1.0 million, in line with fourth quarter last year. Similar to the annual comparison noted above, the fewer displays sold during the fourth quarter 2015 were more than offset by a higher average selling price.

    I think the use of the term 4K here is just lazy.
    4K is used for high definition TV's and Cinema.
    There are multiple definitions but are all approx 4K x 2k, thus 8 million pixels

    Emagin as we know is 2K x 2k, thus 4 million pixels

    While AMD's Radeon Pro Duo is aimed at existing VR devices and content creation, AMD's Roy Taylor did hint at what the future might hold for the company during a pre-briefing call, outside of sticking an entire PC inside a headset:

    "We are already working with a headset manufacturer, unannounced, with a 4K per eye headset. It exists. It's quite, quite beautiful, and we believe that the roadmap to go into higher resolutions will happen more quickly than is probably expected. Once you've seen a high resolution VR experience, you can see that it's really quite beautiful."

    What I do not understand how you can believe the analysis of data from a days trading of 11366 shares in a stock with average trading volume of 87000 shares. Any method of statistical analysis surely needs much more data.

    I have been looking for any latest information on ENVGIII. The only source giving any time line was wikipedia. I assume we are in this release, though it has never been confirmed as far as I know. If it is to be fielding in 2017 there would need to be some production in 2016.

    “As of July 2015, the Army had bought about 9,000 ENVG-I and 16,000 ENVG-II units. Beginning in FY 2017, the ENVG-III is expected to begin fielding, with a total of 41,000 to be produced by BAE Systems and DRS Technologies. Like previous versions, the ENVG-III allows soldiers to choose between night vision, thermal, hybrid, and a hybrid where thermal images show up with an outline, but extends the thermal capacity out to the entire 40-degree field of view rather than just a circle in the middle, and has a sleeker design for the device and battery pack, improved resolution, is lighter at less than two pounds, and is designed to work with the FWS-I. Plans are to equip 24 ENVGs per platoon, with each costing an estimated $10,000, cheaper than previous versions due to competition and improved technology.”
