  • UPDATED: 7/21/16 8:24 am ET - adds regional results

DETROIT -- General Motors’ strategy of focusing on retail sales in North America paid off in the second quarter, with net income more than doubling from the year-earlier quarter.

GM reported overall net income of $2.87 billion in the second quarter, up from $1.12 billion in the second quarter of 2015.

“This was an outstanding quarter for GM,” CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. “We’ll continue to focus on driving profitable growth and leveraging our technical expertise to lead in the future of personal mobility.”

The automaker raised its earnings guidance for 2016, saying it expects to make between $5.50 and $6 a share for the year, up from its previous projection of $5.25 to $5.75 a share.

Revenue rose 11 percent to $42.37 billion, a record for any quarter since GM’s emergence from bankruptcy in July 2009.

The results handily beat Wall Street expectations. Analysts had predicted the automaker would post earnings of $1.52 per share. Actual earnings came in at $1.86 cents per share.

  • General Motors reported an adjusted 2Q profit of $1.86 per share, topping the estimate for $1.52. Revenue for the automaker came in at $42.4 billion, also beating the estimate for $38.91 billion

UPDATED: 7/20/16 10:20 pm ET -- adds background, details

Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the company into electric semi trucks and buses, car sharing and solar energy systems.

In a blog post titled "Master Plan, Part Deux," Musk sketched a vision of an integrated carbon-free energy enterprise offering a wider range of vehicles, and products and services beyond electric cars and batteries. He restated his argument that Tesla should acquire and integrate the operations of solar panel installer SolarCity Corp, where Musk is chairman and a major shareholder.

Musk wrote: “By definition, we must at some point achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse. Given that we must get off fossil fuels anyway and that virtually all scientists agree that dramatically increasing atmospheric and oceanic carbon levels is insane, the faster we achieve sustainability, the better.”

Oh,yes the Headlines tried to make a negative story for GM & Ford.
Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) did poorly by comparison, and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) also faltered. The numbers signal the challenges the U.S. car companies have outside America.

Over the January to June period, Ford sales rose only 5.4% to 554,861. Sales of GM’s Opel operation rose 8.1% to 533,242. Both had sales that were dwarfed by European car companies. Volkswagen, the largest of these, leads the market, despite the scandal over its diesel engines.

Ford and GM Sales Stumble in Europe (NYSE: F) (NYSE: GM) - 24/7 Wall St. Nothing more than Smart consumers trying to protect their own companies.

My name I've never ever posted. The Yahoo email was a Yahoo mistake not mine. I don't use the Yahoo email. I have a different one that I use the one that mallen hacked. The one that was used to make email contact with.My mistake was being to up front with him.
