    All good info....Much appreciated. My understanding is that some buyers are getting the glider kits because they are not satisfied with the performance and fuel economy of the newer emission engines. My understanding is that the emission system has to match the model year of the engine and not the model year of the truck itself. (New truck+older remanufactured engine+plus older emission system). The finished glider can be 20 to 30% less expensive than the same model truck that leaves the factory complete. Also, from what I have been able to learn it looks like the few companies I've seen finishing these kits specialize in a few certain truck models and use a specific engine and trans combination so they surely get some production efficiencies with this standardization to keep costs down some what. A remanufactured Detroit series 60 seems to be a popular engine choice for these kit trucks. The kits leave the factory pre prepped for Detroit, Cummins, or Cat power. Resale/trade-in value seems to be a big down side for the gliders though.

  • Been reading up some on these glider kit trucks (new truck minus engine and trans). I understand what a glider kit is and I think I have a pretty good idea as to why some operators buy them. My questions for the sharp truck people on the board are as follows. 1. Who is it that normally installs the engine and trans in these kit trucks? Dealership? Third party up-fitter? Other? 2. Are these glider kit trucks typically sold new at the same dealerships that also sell trucks that are delivered complete from the factory? 3. Approximately what % of new truck sales are gliders industry wide? 4. Approximately what % of new KW and Pete sales are gliders ?
