Are you saying that the article is addressing LED's for TVs and not LED's in general? If that's true, what is driving the stock down today? Anyway, LED TVs will be replaced by OLEDs over the next few years

  • LED package pricing on the decline, says firm
Siu Han, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 13 May 2015]

LED package pricing is continuing to fall in the second quarter of 2015 and so far has dropped 1-9%, excluding 2835 packages 2835. Since 2835 LED products are the mainstream in China's lighting market, the average price decline has reached 10-17%, more severe than other package types. For backlighting LED package products, average LED pricing has dropped 3-6%. Price competition in the direct-type LED backlight market remains the fiercest in 2015 versus markets for other types of LED packages, according to LEDinside.

The quarterly price drop-off for products of the 0.5W 2835 LED category has reached 17% because they are currently the main offering of many China-based LED makers. Consequently, price competition among 2835 products is quite intense. Both 1W 3030 LED products and 1-5W high power LED (ceramic substrate) products have seen an average price decline of 9% so far in the second quarter. By contrast, price changes for the rest of LED products have been relatively small.

For the LED backlighting market, growth in 2015 has been slower than previously because end market demand picked up much later and changes were made to China's LED subsidy policy. LEDs for direct-type TV applications have experienced the greatest price decline in the second quarter, with 3030, 2835, 3535 and 3228 packages falling to US$0.25-0.30/unit. LED package price for mid-range and low-end TVs has dropped by nearly 6% each quarter. 7020 packages, which are the mainstream for edge-type TV application, are priced around US$0.085-0.095/unit, the firm said.
