Surfactants are also used in the turf management and farming industry. When spraying chemicals that need to be absorbed though the plant leaf for efficacy, a surfactant added to the liquid to be sprayed allows the water (thus the chemical mixed with the water) to cover more of the plant leaf. Without a surfactant, the water has a tendency to "bead" on the leaf thus covering less of the leaf. Without a surfactant in the mix, the water can bead together and drip off the plant.
Being a former turf management guy, and for what it's worth, I can tell you BASF is a major player in that industry.
