Few stocks are moving today like Unisys (UIS 24.33, +4.95), which is soaring after the information technology company reported better than expected, and much improved, results for the third quarter.

Revenue increased 11% to $883 million, gross margins expanded 490 basis points to 26.6%, operating margins jumped 570 basis points to 8.7%, income before taxes nearly tripled to $77.6 million, and non-GAAP diluted EPS, which excludes a $17.9 million pension expense, surged to $1.30 versus $0.25 in the same period a year ago.

Unisys reported that revenues increased 12% in the U.S. and 11% on the international side (8% on a constant currency basis). Foreign currency translation reportedly had a one percentage point positive impact on revenue comparisons.

The top-line growth was driven by a 6% increase in its core services business, which accounted for 86% of total revenue. Growth in systems integration and IT outsourcing, the company said, more than offset declines in infrastructure services.

The company's technology segment, which accounted for 14% of total revenue, saw revenues surge 66% on the back of significantly higher sales of ClearPath enterprise software and servers.

Recall that Unisys fell well shy of analysts' EPS expectations for the second quarter due to lower sales of ClearPath enterprise software and servers. The company said at the time that those sales can vary significantly from quarter to quarter based on the timing of client transactions.

Well, it appears that the timing was good for Unisys in the third quarter -- and that has certainly been good for shareholders today.

Unisys, which is currently conducting a search for a new CEO, ended the third quarter with a cash balance of $477 million and total debt of $215 million. Its net cash position equates to a little more than $5.00 per share.

At its current price, Unisys trades at roughly 9x estimated 2015 earnings before accounting for its net cash position.
