Ignore Investment Tips from Stock Message Boards, Say Researchers

Prabhudev Konana, Alok Kumar, Raj Raghunathan and Bin Gu are Ph.D. researchers in marketing, finance and information systems at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Miami. They claim message boards cause good investors to make bad decisions. "It's not as simple as saying, 'Well, it is harmless entertainment,'" says researcher Kumar. "There is real risk you will be influenced by the 'noise' and begin to amplify your own investment biases."

"Individual investors exhibit what is called confirmation bias," says Konana. "They select and read information that conforms to their own preconceived biases, and as a result they actually become more confident in their opinion and trade more frequently, but with lower overall returns." This runs counter to the concept that investors are rational information gatherers. "Behavioral finance studies tell us investors are subject to all manner of psychological biases," he says. "And message boards contribute to these biases, actually amplifying them, particularly for investors with strongly held opinions."

godfrey, ACTC could easily double or triple (maybe more) when trial results are published later this year, why buy a lesser product like STEM when you can buy the best at a discount? All the developmental stage stem cell companies have the same dilution and funding issues. If I was 79 years old I would sell some when trial results are released and take the proceeds to fund a vacation to an Arizona cat house for a couple weeks. You're only 79 once : )

"You need milk, not solid food!"

    Hebrews 5 (NIV)
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Me thinks "We" be a pumper. ACTC does not need pumping, a little more good pr about now would be nice to help push us to .20 and on to glory. Oh, was I just pumping, hard not too. Dy0genes, were you asking for my thoughts on that HIV Device ? I'm kinda green to trading, and my background is med device sales-sales management. I took a look and would think they will do very well for what my input is worth. When I see a device like that I always wonder how best to get it to market. GL

Thanks for your concern Boomer. Oddly enough it does not seem to bother the dog unless he runs on it and he's on meds for any pain. As I mentioned it just happend last week, he's been to the vet, and has surgery ordered and set. Plenty of money to have it done (I'm in med sales). The comment about actc needs to go up pay for it was a little joke. Hey as I mentioned in a earlier post, did you just start trading? I noticed your name was born on the 19th?

    FIGHTERPILOT • Dec 11, 1999 9:09 PM
Let me try one more time. I am very optimistic about GENTA's chances to raise sufficient funds. I just do not share your opinion that excellent scientific results lead to an avalange of money heading your way. The experience I am talking about is that several times I thought our publications in the most prestigious journals would lead to nonstop ringing of our phones. It did not happen. This is not a negative experience it is reality, but it also means that with the necessary persistence a company can overcome this " overlooked " status. I believe GENTA is getting there.

    FIGHTERPILOT • Jan 26, 2000 3:49 PM
    The case for "longs"
    1. If GENTAs anti cancer drugs get approved, I think we agree that the price for the stock will be above $100.
    2. Trading in and out of the stock might be a method for some, in my case it was the reason for some big missed opportunities.
    3. If someone believes in the technology of GENTA, he should enjoy being part of an exciting development. Staying on the sidelines is no fun.
    4. In Dr. von Hoff we have a scientist which will give his best. Read again his biographical sketch. Consider his present associations.
Conclusion: Staying on the side line, trading in and out, not being part of this development, having no convictions would be for me not satisfying. WE ARE TALKING CANCER!!!

To be clear, buying stock in a company like this barley qualifies as investing – it’s more speculation. Here’s how I do it: 95% of my money is in high quality stocks. I save 5% for speculative, emerging, wing and a prayer companies such as AC – If I can’t find something I like I keep cash. So with the potential for something big at $.08 a share who wouldn’t be a buyer? You just need to have some barriers on how much you’d commit.

Does this approach work? Over 15 years of this approach I can boast one true success – Telmex at $.25 when it was first listed as an ADR. That one gain, I sold for about $20, more then makes up for my other stupid ideas.

AC popped onto my radar screen from my sister-in-law who works for a company that has a very different therapy for macular degeneration. While the two companies’ approaches are very different, both of the lead technologies seem to have some promise in treating various cancers as well as other diseases. If you belief in the potential of stem cell technology AC offers some great potential.
