  • Engulfing Bearish Timeframe: Daily

    Reliability: Moderate

    A reversal pattern.

Occurring during an uptrend, this pattern characterized by a large black real body, which engulfs a white real body (it doesn’t need to engulf the shadows). This signifies that the uptrend has been hurt and the bears may be gaining strength. The Engulfing indicator is also the first two candles of the Three Outside patterns. It is a major reversal signal. Factors that are increasing this signal’s reliability:
    1) The first candlestick has a very small real body and the second candlestick a very large real body.
    2) The pattern appears after a protracted or very fast move.
    3) Heavy volume on the second black candlestick.
    4) The second candlestick engulfs more than one real body.

  • In the past six months 5/19, 6/18, and 8/4 were the dates when NVDA hit resistance @$14.82. If it slips below this level, there is little support till $14.37. Analysts will be watching guidance for the quarter just started. How much cash they spent on buybacks will also be a key factor.

    Sentiment: Sell

  • Looks like institutional dumping today will take it to the 200-day EMA, at the very least. The high down volume in the past week shows that the big boys are bailing in droves.

  • Investors in SoftBank Corp. are surely enjoying Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s progress toward an initial public offering.

SoftBank shares rose 3.7% early Thursday following news on Wednesday that the Chinese e-commerce giant now plans to list in New York after talks with the Hong Kong stock exchange ended.

That’s because SoftBank holds a 36.7% stake in Alibaba–making it the biggest shareholder–and the IPO is expected to value Alibaba at as much as $70 billion. That would make SoftBank’s stake worth around $25 billion, or equal to nearly a third of SoftBank’s current market cap. Not too shabby for a $20 million investment in 2000.

“The only real question [for SoftBank] is how much of the latent value is already priced into its own stock. With a price-to-earnings ratio of under 18 times, shares may yet see significant upside after Alibaba lists,” said Tachibana Securities market adviser Kenichi Hirano.

Yahoo Inc.YHOO +0.22% owns 24% of Alibaba and founder Jack Ma holds about 7%.

Alibaba wants a listing structure that would allow it to go public without forcing its partners, including Mr. Ma, other co-founders and long-term employees to relinquish the right to nominate the majority of the company’s board.

Led by billionaire founder Masayoshi Son, SoftBank invested in Alibaba when the Chinese company, which was founded in 1999, was still a startup.

SoftBank’s investment is paying off as it pushes into the U.S. market following its $21.6 billion acquisition of telecom carrier Sprint Corp., the biggest takeover deal in Japanese corporate history.

I'm hoping for an Alibaba Group IPO too. If they want to go public this year, they need to decide on where they plan to list this month or they will miss the 2013 window.

    Nokia should trade atleast 10$

This is the best thing that could happen for Nokia. They are shedding the weakest part of their business, and the core (NSN) is highly profitable. I'm sure the deal was thoroughly reviewed by the Finnish authorities and they gave their blessing after running the numbers.

For MSFT it makes sense because they get a great international phone footprint at a super low price. The Nokia carrier relationships developed over the years are worth a lot to MSFT.

Lastly they get a new CEO who can seamlessly tuck Nokia into the MSFT fold. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nokia's stock hit double digits tomorrow, given the strength in the futures market. All in all, very positive for Nokia's stock price. Not sure about MSFT.

HONG KONG—Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is in talks with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to come up with an ownership structure that would allow the Chinese e-commerce giant to list its shares while enabling founder Jack Ma and his management team to maintain control, people familiar with the talks said.

  • High level of short interest, stock buybacks, and dividends is boosting NVDA's strong price performance this week, in spite of $hitty earnings last week.

Although small of stature, the charismatic founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, leaves big shoes to fill. Stepping into the role as the company’s new and second-ever Chief Executive is Jonathan Lu, a 43-year old company veteran from southern China’s Guangdong province who has experience in all facets of its operations.

Mr. Lu’s previous positions, as the company’s chief data officer and head of Alibaba’s mobile operating system indicate the company will stick to previous initiatives laid out by Mr. Ma. The company has been working to make use of the massive amounts of data it collects on transactions and users, and also to expand beyond its formidable command of the PC Internet commerce sector to attract China’s growing number of smartphone users to its mobile services.

Since joining Alibaba in 2000, Mr. Lu has presided over a number of core parts of the company’s business at key moments, from running one of its key online shopping sites to helping to create its online payment system. Portrayed by the company as a sort of Mr. Fix It who has several times solved key company problems, his appointment also shows Mr. Ma’s emphasis on smoothly managing the company’s massive and complicated operations.

"This (cash) is down from the $6 billion at year end because we repurchased 38.1 million shares of stock in the first quarter at an average price of $20.35 for our $775 million."

March buybacks were only 5.1 million shares for $112 million, so we could see a splurge soon. Maybe some deductive reasoning could predict an accurate buyback volume and average share price.

Thank you kindly for actual data. February was a short month, so if they bought back at the same rate from the beginning of the year, $400 looks like a reasonable estimate. We'll know on Tuesday.
