    Price Drop

SIMG is in the best position it has been in years. New versions / Revs of their chips, both MHL and HDMI, which will help the growth in the 2nd half of 2014 and all of 2015. The challenge they have is with WirelessHD and when will that get some significant adoption, to offset the qtrly spend on that technology. If they get some significant wins in the WirelessHD area, there is a good chance they will be bought out from another chip mfg, like Broadcom or Qualcomm. Until then if they perform consistently, without the qtrly bumps they have run into, the stock should do well. The mgmt. team is mediocre at best though, that is definitely one risk.

  • Samsung gives preliminary estimates on the 8th for their qtr, that is Monday afternoon in the US, the 7th. That may give SIMG some direction.

Sony PS4 VR Headset - Project Morpheus

Yes I know that...but no release date, no concrete specifications. Like I said....too much fan fare for a prototype. How many new devices are shown at CES at this stage, more are farther along and closer to production is my point. I think we will feel the Putin effect in the markets shortly. If not him, then China's growth issues.

  • Puzzled...all this fan fair by Sony for a frickin prototype. Delays and all they had was a prototype that was wired and they hope to launch it as a wireless product when it goes to market. Would be interesting to understand are any of the challenges on the wireless side. My hunch would be SIMG wireless hd technology would be involved...but here we are closing the first qtr with no Tier 1 wins. Not sure if this rally over 7 will hold...good luck to all.

No I don't, but you do not understand what has been holding this stock back. Their investment in wireless, a $4 million a qtr investment. What the analysts/market wants to see is a significant adoption of this technology. If Sony puts it into a marquee product like the PS4 VR headset that says something about other industry leaders looking to incorporate this technology. It proves it's ready for prime time. Of all potential revenue streams of SIMG, wireless HD has the largest potential. Do you realize their ASP of their MHL/HDMI chips is about .92 cents - yep under a buck! WirelessHD has an ASP of about 10 times that. That is what the analysts want to see...a significant Tier 1 adoption of the product in a notable product. The VR headset for the PS4 would be a great start. Wireless backhaul chips - B--F--D- IMO.

It's the Sony VR headset that will be announced on Tuesday after 5:00 pm PST. The cell backhaul chips are nothing exciting. Small potatoes in terms of future revenue. You will know after another day.

Google sony virtual reality headset with the last week as the search criteria. That will be announced on March the GDC conference and there is a good chance it will have wirelesshd in it. If it does, you could see the stock pass $7 a share possibly $8. If it does not then, the sell or hold is up to you.

Looks like nothing on the WirelessHD front, but MHL 3.0 looking good. With the new MediaTek design wins and MHL moving forward the second half should look better. But no WirelessHD design wins after two major electronic industry mega-events. Not good.

Your last hope for a while is the GDC event in mid March, where Sony is expected to announce the delayed PS4 virtual headset. Will it be based on a WirelessHD solution? Need to do something exotic to kick b-u-t-t on Oculus Rift's VR headset....If it isn't I don't know Camillo was expecting if this isn't the 2nd Tier 1 design win he noted and that Sony delayed last fall. If not, and no other wins in WirelessHD at GDC, then this is not an executive team that knows how to manage expectations of a publicly traded company IMO. 3 major electronic trade shows and no wins then...#$%$?

  • Camillo's signature achievement at SIMG is purchasing SiBeam and much has been spent on this technology by SIMG, north of 60 million it appears? At this point it needs to be called a huge blunder. And what does he have to show for it....10 million in stock based compensation to those at SIMG and a big fat #$%$ donut to shareholders. Oh yeah, it's been adopted in accessories and a POS Sony Headset. Camillo has missed every revenue target on this technology including 2 tier 1 wins by the end of 2013. They guy is blowing smoke and being highly overpaid.

Nice downgrade from Needham today. January 31, 2014 6:55 AM EST

Needham & Company downgraded Silicon Image (NASDAQ: SIMG) from Buy to Hold on decelerating MHL growth and slower mobile 60GHz traction following Q4 numbers.

"While 4Q13 results and 1Q14 guidance were better than ests, we are moving to the sidelines for two fundamental reasons: 1) the MHL growth rate is decelerating from 23% Y/Y in '13 to 10% in '14 due to mix shift to emerging markets, and 2) lack of meaningful 60GHz sales in '14 to offset heavy investments," analyst Rajvindra S. Gill said.

He adds, "In our view, we have to see 60GHz be adopted in the smartphone/tablet markets or a meaningful gaming platform in order to justify the ongoing expenses associated with this product. Moreover, given the lack of significant earnings in the model, we see limited upside for the shares at the current valuation."

    Samsung Electronics fourth-quarter profit sags

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd posted its first decline in quarterly profit in two years, hit by one-off special bonus as well as slowing smartphone sales as it braces for a year of tougher competition with rival Apple Inc.

The world's biggest smartphone maker kept its full-year investment plan conservative and warned it would be difficult to increase earnings in the first quarter as demand pulls back from the year-end holiday period.

October-December operating profit fell 6 percent on year to 8.3 trillion won ($7.7 billion), in line with a previous estimate of 8.3 trillion won, Samsung said in a statement on Friday.

Operating profit from display unit Samsung Display tumbled 90 percent to 110 billion won as weaker-than-forecast sales of the Galaxy S4 left smartphone screens sitting in the inventory, while subdued sales of television sets also had an impact on TV screen shipments.

Interesting timing. I would have waited to publish it after Samsung's earnings on 1/24, which we will see tomorrow afternoon.
