  • After all the recent bad press you would think they would be in the stores and or thinking of away out of the mess they are in. But no, they will be at the lush green polo fields of Barrington and Oak Brook, Illinois! I hear they have a heck of party going on after the matches on Sunday by Lake Fred next to the MCD corporate HQ. I bet you won't find a Big Mac anywhere in sight!

  • As I have been posting here for some time the main problem is this screwy system that MCD now has with its custom time and complex ordering system, the drive-in car hop business, and worse yet its overall inattention to the many problems in the stores.

As I have been saying bring back the "SIR SPEEDY" system that MCD great decades ago! Cut the menu, cut the complexity, go back to dedicated workers in dedicated work stations, etc. etc. If MCD does not change things will continue on a downward bitter spiral!

From Joe Cahill's column in today's Chicago business:

"Gloom grows heavier by the day over McDonald's Corp.

This week's report of the worst monthly same-store sales decline in 10 years fueled a pessimistic narrative of a company that has lost touch with customers, underestimated competitors and positioned itself on the wrong side of broader economic trends."

I frankly expected SWC to plunge to about 12 after the SA strikes. So I think it is doing well.

The problem is, as the WSJ pointed out Tuesday, the markets seem to be totally detached from underlying econimic and market fundamentals; everything is centered on the FED. Metals today are plunging because the "markets" think the Fed will tigten up and interest rates rise and Yellen's speech tomorrow will reflect this. I think it is insane that a Fed chairperson has this much influence over world economies but as they say "you can't fight the Fed".

My bet it will be another Fed "goobly #$%$" speech with a little something for everyone to read into. Metals tomorrow should surge if there is no clear indication of an interest rate rise and particularly SSRI, NG, IAG - SWC maybe up a per cent or two. My big bet now is TMV - that should rise dramatically with any interest rate rise. But as Bell pointed out it is very dangerous; but as they say "no risk, no reward!"

I want to get back into SWC at some point when it is more reasonable in that reports about South African production are dismal and we still have Czar Putin going bonkers - now attacking McDonald's. Even for him closing the ever popular with Russians McDonald's is bizarre. I didn't think it would be possible that he would ban Russian pt/pd exports and shoot himself in the foot; but I think he is losing it big time and we can no longer rule that out. If he does ban pt/pd exports; then I would think, SWC and maybe even that all-time loser PAL could soar.

  • What else can explain the fact that with supposedly tight supplies, strikes, power/water shortages, and the usual litany of production woes (SA pt production is still 37% below last year!) pt/pd prices are really just threading along even though based on the facts and fundamentals (soaring car production, Chinese pollution mandates, etc. etc.) one would think they would be sky-rocketing!

The latest from Bloomberg: "By Nicholas Larkin and Luzi Ann Javier Aug 21, 2014 1:21 PM CT
"Platinum headed for the longest run of losses in 27 years in London."

I think the problem is the FEDERAL RESERVE; it seems they now control everything. The market is awaiting Yellen's speech tomorrow like it was God's on Mount Sinai!

  • Yes, our buddy Putin is at it again! This time his wrath is directed at our beloved Ronald McDonald! Who would know he hates clowns so much!

skinz4q, you don 't even have to go that far to look at the customers - just look at the staff!

I was in a MCD the other day, and these were not old folks but young women, and they had butts so big that they could not pass each other in the counter aisle. Now I am no slim Jim, but there obviously is something going on when you sit in a MCD for a half an hour and to see so many people, especially wommen, that are obiously heavy set, with monster butts, and distorted figures. It scares me and I now look at my fries with trepadation!

The totally bizarre thing, again an example of our stupidity, is that there are some Russian companies operating in the US supplying critical things to our defense industry. So ... alsoadehoop1 ... you may be right; the more conflicts the greater profits for energy and defense firms!

  • boulmichone boulmichone Aug 12, 2014 4:30 PM Flag

Right you are bell. I meant "imports"; the US can ban imports.

I still have never found out exactly how much Russian pd/pt is used in American vehicle production. I know SWC and PAL can not provide it all even though I think they may provide more than 50%.

The thing is is Russians sell a lot of pt/pd through the Swiss and once it enters the world market, it becomes mixed and very muddled. If we really wanted to hurt Putin and his gang we would have to ban all sales of Russian pt/pd/au, etc. to the West and, as you point out, even if we wanted to it practically would be impossible.

I agree cripp. Plus Putin is now finding himself in a situation I don't think he was quite ready for and may have painted himself in a corner.

His military is basically one-fifth the size of what it was in the Soviet era, even though it has made great strides in modernizing and tactics. However it is not generally believed it could sustain prolonged campaigns - even against weak European and American forces. For example, it is desperate for those two new state-of-the-art assault ships the French are building for them ( one of the stupidist and most insane things the French are doing!). Its army has been more defense oriented than offensive, except for going after shattered, poor, and defenseless East European countries.

But things now are turning now in the Ukraine as their forces, with now thousands of American mercenaries, CIA, Special Forces, etc. helping out are making serious progress in routing the Russian and Pro-Russian forces. They are appealing to Putin, the Great Saviour of the Russian Peoples, for help. And there is little he can do now without showing his hand and deploying his military forces officiallly.

Plus he has banned the import of Western foods! This was stupid in that after 20 years after the fall of the Communist system, shockingly, even with a so-called capitalist system the Russians still can not produce enough food for themselves even though they have massive land for this. But the big thing is that the small but important Russian middle class has grown very fond of all things Western as have their upper clases. They love hanging out in Baden-Baden Germany, the Riveria, etc. in the summer and Miami in the winter. The tougher sanctions are starting to impact them though no one seriously believes missing Octoberfest in Germany will seriously impact them.

But more importantly, the Russian political environment has always been treacherous. They basically are a pack of wolves that will turn on their leader at the first smell of blood!

  • Folks, this XIN gravy train is getting ready to leave the station ... on the way to Bonanazaville! Don't be left behind as it roars past 4, 5, 6, 7 on to 10 and more! Don't be on eof those sorry mopes; "IF ONLY, IF OINLY I had bought XIN! "

You saw how HGSH shot up 10, 20, 30 , 40 and 50% IN ONE DAY! Just wait for Friday as XIN releases earnings! Remember XIN is a much stronger operation! So don't delay ... buy XIN .... TODAY!

XIN is near a yearly low because of that stupid 60 minutes show about empty Chinese apt complexes. 60 minutes does not understand how they do things in China and the brilliance of their leadership - taking 250 million people from the rice patties and building a modern 21st Century economy in under 20 years is proof!

XIN will SOAR NEXT FRIDAY AFTER RESULTS COME OUT!

  • XIN financials are stronger then HGSH. If HGSH can have such a good pop, what about XIN when it releases its results Friday the 15th before the bell? I think so! HGHS and XIN are winners!

Now I travel a lot and frequent a lot of MCDs - when I can get in. What is truly totally amazing about this drop is that July is the peak of the travel season as America hits the road after a long bitter winter and the economy rebounds a bit. Demand again is not the problem; meeting it is! July should have been a blockbuster!

  • boulmichone boulmichone Aug 8, 2014 4:02 PM Flag

Yea, ok I have been there too. But I still bet as far as fast food goes MCD has the best and most opulent corporate HQ campus!

  • And yet they blame everything but the SYSTEM! The food is good, the stores are packed, the pricing is right yet they blame everything but the crummy, rotten system that is slow, cumbersome, and way too complicated for the staff. Improve the system and the sales and profits will .. SKYROCKET! Bring back the tried and true SIR SPEEDY original system of food preparation and delivery! Get orders filled in under 2 minutes!

My main worry is not with new pt/pd mines, mining asteroids for pt/pd, salvaging WWII Russian platinum ships but ... SYNTHETHIC PALLADIUM. The Chinese and others are really starting to make some real advances in substitutes for pd. If this were to happen it would ruin the pt/pd mining industry just as nylon and synthetic rubber did to the rubber industry after WWII - almost wiped out over night.

  • There are more media reports of increased Russian intrusions into American air space and waters. It is accelerating and they are flying deeper and more frequently into American sir space. Also I was watching Candien TV the other night and they now report Russian troops prowling around their northern artic regions. This all is not looking good. Will Obama eventually ban Russian pt/pd exports? Will they?

The worldwide situation is getting so muddled and complex I can't make heads or tails out of it anymore. But what I do think is that SWC can move greatly up or down sooner than later - I just can't figure out which way.

  • As in many McDonald's, there was a group of old "geeysers" that would sit around and B S all day getting their free senior citizen coffee re-fills. Lately I hav not seen them at the MCD I go to. So I asked what happened and one of the crew said that they now stay in their cars and have their cofee run out to them in the parking lot!

Isn't there anybody in MCD management that doesn't understand that running product out to cars is time-consuming, chaos causing, and costly? How did this non-sense get started? If we are going to do it we should at least be charging a "running fee"!

i think you caught a nice bounce up on this Putin business but I still think the trend, as for all metals, will be down through Labour Day - as long as the cloud of coming interest rate hikes and a good economy is around.

I am going to play that with TMV, a synthhetic, that will move up dramatically as rates increase.
