The research will mainly come from Universities and research hospitals who are desparate for a non-opiod pain killer. Won't cost Arena a nickel. As the research cascades, more and more studies will be initiated by academia.

A unique molecule DESIGNED to fit a receptor geometry is not the same as finding a compound from an Amazon jungle plant that just happens to have medicinal functionality. This is Arena's technology. It is being licensed to other drug companies to design additional new drugs for other chronic conditions. I cannot conceive of a way that a prior art claim could be made on this kind of patent of which Arena has many. The patent office action is meant to help companies and individuals that have been using a particular chemical process for years who suddenly found that they could be thwarted by a patent that did not discover them in practice prior art. That is the only way that an issued patent could be invalidated.

    SUGAR and FRUCTOSE

    by freddywampus Apr 27, 2015 1:26 PM

High Fructose Corn Syrup is the culprit. I was approved as an alternative for cane sugar in the 1970s. I t was developed by Cargill at the urging of t he USDA who was looking for a sugar that was less labor intensive than cane sugar in the US and led to sugar beet cultivation, but also to punish Fidel Castro..cane sugar being Cuba's biggest legal export. Even when it was suspected to be a problem because it evades the body's alert system to release insulin, they refused to open that bag of snakes. It has taken University research to discover its problem, notably causes liver cirrhosis just like alcohol and high blood sugars causing diabetes. You want to watch Dr Robert Lustigs Utube The Bitter Truth. Cane sugar IS recognized by the body and releases insulin proportionately. Since HFCS is used all over the world...all of the world is now experiencing obesity and increased diabetes.

18th Anniversary of Arena this month…..

I'm trying to figure you out JD...you have been a very long poster to this board. Your messages have been very useful to me and others to get facts straight. I vaguely remember you are an MD....maybe not, but perhaps you felt you were jilted by Arena. I, too, have not been successful in actually getting a response back from their IR, so maybe that is your beef. But that refusal to respond, except at conference calls may have been a good move and not opening a bag of snakes from bashers who constantly probe for inconsistencies in what they say or did. I have to assume you own some shares. So what IS THE DEAL?

    Retail Price Comparison

    by budtuba Apr 21, 2015 6:18 PM
budtuba budtuba Apr 22, 2015 4:57 PM Flag

I was not trying to reflect what patients had to pay. I merely asked for the cash price without any insurance coverage. As far as monry bering paid back to the drug companies, insurance coverage is not an issue. Certainly, as insurance coverage improves, sales will increase because many people cannot afford the total price tag. I was surprised that the list price of Qysmia and Belviq were the same. Store computer error...I don't know.

    Retail Price Comparison

    Typo...all are 1 month scripts.

    ryt5

  • I asked for retail prices of the three weight-loss drugs on the market today from Wegman's Pharmacy.
    Belviq 60 tablets = 1 month script is $263.34
    Qysmia 30 tablets = 12 month scrpt is $263.23
    Contrave 30 tablets = 1 month script is $65.64

If the drug company receives 25% of retail price then
    Belviq 1 script = $65.83
    Qysmia 1 xcript = $65.83
    Contrave 1 script = $16.41

The dollar value of 18000 scripts of Belviq would be $1,185,030
The dollar value of 11000 scripts of Qysmia would be $724,130
The dollar value of 10,000 scripts of Contrave would be $161,410

Those would approximately represent the last recorded Scripts by Sharon.

Patents for Contrave and Mysimba November 2014

budtuba budtuba Apr 21, 2015 5:11 PM Flag

Wow...that gives them a total of 11 patents and applications. Compare that with Arena's 355 patents and applications.

I had been under the impression that one of the ingredients of Contrave was not approved in Europe, so I thought to search that out:

    Contrave = Naltrexone/Bupropion

In the European Union, bupropion containing medicinal products were authorised as an “aid to smoking-cessation in combination with motivational support in nicotine-dependent patients” through a Mutual Recognition Procedure (MRP) with the Netherlands as Reference Member State (RMS). Since licensing, concerns were raised in relation to the reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) received associated with the use of bupropion containing medicinal products, particularly those of seizure and fatalities.

Naltrexone has not been approved as a stand alone drug, however...is available with different trade names in some European countries. The combination drug equivalent to Contrave IS APPROVED as Mysimba:

    Why is Mysimba approved?

The Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) considered that although the effectiveness of the medicine in promoting weight loss was limited, it was sufficient to be clinically significant, and mandatory re-assessment of treatment after 4 months should ensure that the medicine only continues to be used in those in whom the medicine provides adequate benefit. Regarding safety, although the CHMP had some concerns about possible effects on the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular outcomes) and a slightly increased risk of seizures (fits), the most common side effects were largely manageable, as patients could stop taking the medicine if they were bothersome. Interim data from an ongoing study of cardiovascular outcomes were reviewed during the assessment although the CHMP also recommended ongoing monitoring of the medicine’s cardiovascular effects. On the balance of the available evidence the CHMP decided that Mysimba’s benefits are greater than its risks and recommended that it be approved for use in the EU.

PPS and scripts results have been out of sync for 2 years. Who do you mean by patent pumper girl? I've been a patent pumper since I bought into ARNA three years ago. The Arena patents and applications (all 355 of them) are very important to the strategy of plotting their own destiny rather than CowTowing to a big pharma. If Qysmia and Contrave were so great, why hasn't some big player bought them out?

    Here's the opposing scores:

    Orexigen ----------10 patents and applications
    Vivus ---------------50 patents and applications
    Arena -------------355 patents and applicaitons

Eisai 3Q ER doesn't talk about smoking cessation

    by y486145 Mar 21, 2015 4:07 PM
budtuba budtuba Apr 20, 2015 3:04 PM Flag

Eisai has always been very low key about Arena. The smoking cessation trials are still underway and they don't want to excite investors in their stock about in process clinical trials for fear of SEC claims of grandstanding. This would lead to Doctors asking about how well it works and other data they are not ready to unveil until it is a go ahead from the FDA. This cannot be construed to be failure of smoking cessation efficacy.

The poster who quibbled that orphan drugs were meaningless, thinks they are drugs only for Orphans. Duhhh! They really represent the new drugs that were invented and designed to meet a need and have no alternative drugs to meet a need, rather than just finding some existing drugs that might work as combos.
