According to Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley, Rentech would also buy, ship and re-sell pellets from the idled Roddickton plant.

There's no date expected for when this could all take place, but Dalley said he hopes to sign a final agreement soon.

Negotiations Ongoing with Company Interested in Timber Supply
    Tuesday , April 8 2014 | 6:41:30 PM

The province says negotiations are still ongoing with a company interested in a large timber supply in Central Newfoundland, but despite reports, it says no deal has been finalized. The resource that once belonged to Abitibi-Bowater was expropriated by government in 2008. VOCM's Danielle Barron reports.

Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley confirms negotiations are ongoing with Rentech. Based in California, the company owns and operates wood fibre processing and nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing businesses. It is expected to deliver first pellets from two new plants in Ontario later this year. For years government has been negotiating with companies to develop the timber resource in Grand Falls-Windsor estimated at 280,000 cubic metres. It's largely speculated Botwood would serve as a shipping point. In the House of Assembly today, Liberal Leader Dwight Ball asked what the relationship was between the company and government. Minister Dalley would only say negotiations are ongoing.

Ball wants to know how much financial support the province is going to offer to Rentech. Dalley says contrary to some media reports there is no deal done, and therefore no final number in terms of requests for support from government.

  • A company from California has won the harvesting rights to a large wood supply in central Newfoundland that once belonged to Abitibi-Bowater.

CBC News has learned that Rentech now has ownership of the 280,000 cubic metres of wood that once belonged to the former newsprint producer, which shut down its Grand Falls-Windsor mill in early 2009.

Rentech, mainly a fertilizer company in the U.S., is looking into producing wood pellets in Canada.

The company has access to a large wood resource in Ontario, and also owns two wood pellet plants in that province.

In November, the company purchased in idled mill in Wawa, Ont. to convert it into a pellet production facility. It has yet to produce any pellets, but the company said it does have customers.

Scott Jamieson, the publisher of industry news magazine Canadian Biomass, said if the company has customers, it could soon be in business.

"If they have those export agreements, and if they can manage the logistics for shipping, I don't see why they wouldn't have the same success as the larger operations in British Columbia," Jamieson said.

According to industry insiders, Botwood would serve as Rentech's shipping point, and a pellet plant could also be built in the town.

They also said the Newfoundland and Labrador government is prepared to invest $20 million to help in the construction of the pellet plant.

The company, as well as officials with the provincial government, wouldn't agree to an interview until a deal is publicly announced.

Mar 24, 2014. /Lesprom Network/. BRUKS was chosen by Rentech’s engineer, EAD, to supply a linear overpile reclaimer for the new wood pellet facility in Wawa, Ontario. Originally an idle strand board plant, EAD was challenged with the task to convert the plant into a wood pellet facility capable of producing over 400,000 metric tons per year, as the company said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

BRUKS is designing the linear reclaimer to fit within an existing Log Pond building and is delivering it within six months. With a reclaim capacity of up to 110 tons per hour, this system will store and deliver wood chips to the milling and drying process downstream.

BRUKS is a global leader in mechanical-engineering and equipment supply for the bulk materials handling industries.

    Michael Mantha Visits with Rentech

    Tuesday, 18 March 2014 09:38

Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha met with Rentech officials during his constituency week to discuss the progress of their project as well as future jobs it will bring to the community and surrounding areas.

The mill, which will be converted to an industrial wood pellet production facility, will employ 35 workers and support an additional 200 forest industry jobs.

“I have been working with Rentech over the past few years and I am pleased to see this project coming closer to fruition," said Mantha.

"With the downturn in the forestry sector, many of our communities have been hit hard. This project will support much needed jobs and boost the local economy."

Installation of the new equipment will begin at Rentech shortly, with Pellet production expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Rentech has a contract to export pellets to Drax, the UK’s largest power station, which is converting from coal-powered generation to burning biomass fuel after the mill is converted and will have an output of 450,000 tonnes by 2016.

Representatives from Drax were on site to discuss their power deal.

Rentech has been approved to convert the idle mill and is currently in the process of increasing the capacity at the wood pellet facility from 350,000 tonnes per year to 450,000 tonnes per year.

“I am pleased to see things moving forward on time with this project," stated Mantha.

"Jobs in the forestry sector have been on the decline recently. It is encouraging to see some innovation and renewal in this sector from companies like Rentech. I know that this project will have positive economic benefits for not only the community of Wawa but for the surrounding communities as well.”

LOS ANGELES, Mar 03, 2014 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Rentech Nitrogen Partners, L.P. RNF -0.34% today announced the achievement of key milestones for the ammonium sulfate (AS) debottlenecking project at its Pasadena Facility. With the achievement of these milestones, the commissioning phase of the project is now complete.

The plant now produces ammonium sulfate at an average instantaneous rate of 2,100 tons per day, the targeted rate for the project. The increased rate represents a 20% increase from the plant’s previous nameplate production capacity. In addition, on-stream rates and plant reliability have improved, and the quality of ammonium sulfate is the highest since the facility began AS production in 2011.

John Diesch, President of Rentech Nitrogen, commented, “We are extremely pleased with the improved operating performance of the Pasadena Facility since the completion of the debottlenecking project. Importantly, we expect work completed during the debottlenecking project to drive lasting improvements in the plant’s operating performance, reliability, and product quality.” Mr. Diesch added, “We are seeing repeat customers after our first full year of production, and as a result of better liquidity in the domestic market, we are contracting sales at a faster pace compared to last year.”
