  • The VLY earnings problems started before the housing collapse.

You can vote against jerry and the board of toadies, which feels good but makes no difference.

When a stock sucks then sell it. Sometimes we hold the losers too long (and maybe sell the winners too soon).

  • Profits are not going down or up.

TRST is in a major and prolonged rut.

Will the profits go up some day?

    Hey KLM,

    A million times? That's a bit hyperbolic.

I think that you saw some talking head talking about dividend returns for the DOW or for the S&P500, which are dominated by dividend paying stocks.

For the entire stock market your dividend numbers are not correct.

Small caps slightly outperform large caps over time, and small caps don’t pay a lot of dividends.

Here are two simple facts that will make you a better investor.

It’s total return that counts. I gave the example of J&J that gives both good dividends and good price appreciation. In five years I more than doubled my money, while TRST returned about 20% in the same five years. 100% is better than 20%

Consistent and growing profits are more important than anything else.
If you don’t believe that, then give examples of stocks with good consistent profit growth that are not doing well.

  • First of all, I love dividends, but theoretically dividends don’t matter. A business can distribute some profits as cash dividends, or they could use the same money to grow the business instead. So if there are no dividends, you should get more growth in the stock price. Berkshire Hathaway never paid any dividends.

PROFITS are what really matter. When buying a stock look at the profits much more than the dividends. Take TRST as an example. Over 5 years, profits are flat, the dividend is flat, and the stock price is pretty flat. Until the profits improve TRST is a mediocre investment.

It’s much better to have a stock where the PROFITS are going up. Then the dividends can go up and the stock price will go up.

Compare TRST to JNJ. According to S&P if you invested 10k in TRST 5 years ago you’d have $12,320. For JNJ you’d have $20,743. JNJ increases the dividend every year. And the stock price is close to a double.

Of course with dividends you can buy stuff, pay bills, and reinvest.

    hey make10,

Good luck with VLY. I'm out, but I still look back here once in a while.

I've gotten away from single stocks and go mainly with ETFs these days.

    That's better. Ten minutes.

  • It took him more than an hour to respond to my last post.

Let's see if he can do better with this one. He certainly doesn't need any time to think about his mindless responses.

  • His life is centered around this board, using three posting names. Often he responds to himself with the secondary names. He's glued to this board night and day.

He has two goals. One is to try to show his own self worth. Using things like his travels and his newsletter and the Canadian schtick - all bogus of course. Goal two is to spout his juvenile potty talk and to make personal attacks.

My advice for him is to get some professional help, get a job, and get a life.

    hey klm,

Sidney Australia was one of his best posts. Another one was happy "Boxer Day". The "newsletter" is pretty funny too.

With thousands of posts he has NEVER posted anything useful. Once in a blue moon he posts something hilarious when he makes a really dopey mistake.

It seems to happen when he exposes himself as a fraud. He obviously has never been to Sydney, no Canadian would ever call Boxing Day "Boxer Day", and the newsletter with a plethora of subscribers has no contact information of any kind.
