William V. "Bill" Campbell (born August 31, 1940) is an American businessman, currently chairman of Intuit Inc., and a board director at Apple, Inc. He formerly worked for Apple Inc. (as VP of Marketing), Claris (as CEO), and GO Corporation (as CEO).

Apple board member Bill Campbell cut ties to Google over rivalry

    By Josh Ong
Apple Board of Director member and Intuit Chairman Bill Campbell revealed in an interview that increased competition between Apple and Google forced him to choose between the two companies, eventually causing him to sever his ties to Google.

In an interview with Miguel Helft of The New York Times, Campbell admitted that his role as a board member at Apple and an adviser to Google came into conflict as Apple and Google began competing in the smartphone market.

“I don’t do much for Google anymore,” said Campbell. "The Android competition has changed the whole dynamic. I don’t want to be a burden to either company. I don’t want to be a focal point for any dissent.”

A report by the Times in March highlighted Campbell as a potential "peacemaker" in the growing feud between Apple and Google, but went on to note that both Jobs and Schmidt had lobbied Campbell to sever ties with the competition, reportedly going so far as to give him ultimatums. Citing a person with knowledge of the situation, the report claimed Campbell had severed his ties with Google.

Campbell confirmed in his recent interview with the Times that he had indeed chosen Apple, although he "still talks to Eric Schmidt once in a while," according to Monday's report. However, Campbell wasn't the only board member to have to cut ties with Google. In October of last year, Apple board member Dr. Arthur Levinson, former CEO of Genentech, resigned from the Google Board of Directors after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission began investigating the Apple and Google for having "interlocking directorates," which are forbidden for competing companies because of antitrust concerns.

Schmidt was also a member of Apple's board of directors, but resigned last year due to potential conflicts of interest as Apple and Google began to compete over smartphones, browsers, and operating systems.

FTC Investigation Forced John Doerr Off The Amazon Board

Famed venture capitalist John Doerr stepped down as a Amazon board member last month due to an FTC investigation into the ties between Google and Amazon, according to the NYT.

John continues to serve as a board member for Google.

The NYT speculates that increased FTC investigations into Silicon Valley companies -- which often share board member investors from their startup days -- could lead to more awkward situations.

U.S. Steps Up Probe Of Hiring In Tech

By Thomas Catan And Brent kendall

    Updated April 9, 2010 12:01 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON—The Justice Department is stepping up its investigation into hiring practices at some of America's biggest companies, including Google Inc., GOOG Intel Corp. INTC , International Business Machines Corp. ibm , Apple Inc. AAPL and IAC/InterActiveCorp. IACI , people familiar with the matter said.

The inquiry is focused on whether companies, particularly in the technology sector, have agreed not to recruit each others' employees in ways that violate antitrust law. Specifically, the probe is looking into whether the companies' hiring practices are costing skilled computer engineers and other workers opportunities to change jobs for higher pay or better benefits.

More recently, the decision by legendary venture-capital investor John Doerr to resign from Amazon AMZN board was influenced by the FTC investigation, according to a person familiar with the matter. Mr. Doerr—who recently declined to comment — is also on the board of Google.

    The secret coach

A guru to Apple and Google, Bill Campbell [Intuit CEO at some point] is the most confidential advisor in Silicon Valley. How a former college football coach is shaping the character of an industry.

    By Jennifer Reingold, senior writer

    July 21, 2008

At Google, Campbell has played a similarly hands-on role since 2001, when Eric Schmidt was hired as CEO and John Doerr, partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and one of Google's VC investors, suggested that Schmidt might benefit from a session with Campbell. "My initial reaction was 'I don't need any help,'" says Schmidt, who had previously been CEO of Novell. "I don't need a coach." But he agreed to a meeting and asked Campbell what he hoped to get out of it. "He said, 'I'm doing payback. Life has been good to me. Now I'm trying to help everyone else.'"

Justice Department Requires Six High Tech Companies to Stop Entering into Anticompetitive Employee Solicitation Agreements

Settlement Preserves Competition for High Tech Employees

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice announced today that it has reached a settlement with six high technology companies – Adobe Systems Inc., Apple Inc., Google Inc., Intel Corp., Intuit Inc. and Pixar – that prevents them from entering into no solicitation agreements for employees. The department said that the agreements eliminated a significant form of competition to attract highly skilled employees, and overall diminished competition to the detriment of affected employees who were likely deprived of competitively important information and access to better job opportunities.

The Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division filed a civil antitrust complaint today in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, along with a proposed settlement that, if approved by the court, would resolve the lawsuit.

According to the complaint, the six companies entered into agreements that restrained competition between them for highly skilled employees. The agreements between Apple and Google, Apple and Adobe, Apple and Pixar and Google and Intel prevented the companies from directly soliciting each other’s employees. An agreement between Google and Intuit prevented Google from directly soliciting Intuit employees.

Peter Wendell’s contribution, offered Proulx, was his
“great strength in people management.” Wendell
taught Intuit a business world equivalent of the
Socratic method, raising searching questions that
forced people to reach novel conclusions. A different
style, Cook recalled, from the old startup days: “It
wasn’t telling, ordering or yelling. Peter got them to
think about the business in new ways.”

Cook interviewed dozens before selecting four
talented venture capitalists: John Doerr of Kleiner
Perkins Caufield & Byers, Burt McMurtry and John
Johnson of TVI, and Peter Wendell of Sierra Ventures.
They bought 20% of Intuit, with Doerr and McMurtry
    joining the board.

Each contributed up to twenty hours a week of his
time. To begin with, the venture capitalists taught
Cook and his team how to find good legal advice and
steered him away from an outside supplier with a bad
reputation. Their counsel went much deeper. Doerr,
who made his mark as an early backer of Compaq and
Sun Microsystems, introduced Intuit to a strategic
planning system he had used as a manager at Intel in the 1970s.

NSA Defender Under Investigation For Alleged X-Rated Pictures

    Posted: 06/23/2014

A prominent defender of the National Security Agency, Naval War College professor John Schindler, is under investigation for allegedly creating "inappropriate content" that appeared on social media, a college official told The Huffington Post in a statement on Monday.

Schindler and his wife abruptly shut down their social media accounts on Monday, with Schindler telling readers of his blog he was taking a break because of harassment from critics of the NSA. He has long been a controversial and outspoken voice in the debate over surveillance; he has referred to journalist Glenn Greenwald as "Glenda" and has disparaged WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning for coming out as transgender.

The very unsafe for work photos, along with an accompanying note, can be seen here. Their provenance is unclear, as is who originally posted them.

Former NSA Official John Schindler Labels Glenn Greenwald ‘Glenda’ In Homophobic and Transphobic Smear [Updated]

By: DSWright Thursday August 22, 2013

Many former and current NSA employees cannot be pleased with the revelations leaked by Edward Snowden. But targeting one of the journalists involved in the case with a homophobic and transphobic smear crosses a line, especially for a sitting college professor. John Schindler is a former NSA official and current Naval War College professor and referred to Glenn Greenwald, who is openly gay, as “Glenda” in the midst of what is a long series of tweets condemning Greenwald and his reporting on the NSA. The tweet was in response to someone sending Schindler a picture of Private Manning in female form.

Something Schindler seems particularly upset by.
