The Electric Reliability Council of Texas released its final Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy Thursday, reporting the grid operator expects to begin the summer with tight reserves that will improve as new generating capacity comes online.
Six new generating projects with a combined summer capacity rating of 2,153 MW are expected to come online in Texas this summer. Four of those six are new combined cycle natural gas-fired power plants with a combined summer capacity rating of 2,112 MW.
“The outlook improves significantly by August, when we typically experience the highest system peaks of the year,” ERCOT Director of System Planning Warren Lasher stated in a release. “We may need to ask consumers to reduce electric use if we experience extremely hot weather or widespread unit outages during the early summer months.”
The four combined cycle natural gas-fired facilities expected to begin operations this summer are Ferguson Replacement, Panda Sherman, Panda Temple I and Deer Park Energy Center. The Deer Park plant is expected to begin commercial operations on July 1, and the other three plants are expected to begin commercial operations by Aug. 1.
