    Split Question

From the SEC filing, you can find it on the visa website
    -
Also, on January 28, 2015, Visa’s board of directors declared a four-for-one split of its class A common stock. On March 18, 2015, each class A common stockholder
of record at the close of business on February 13, 2015 (the “Record Date”), will receive a dividend of three additional shares for every share held on the Record Date.
Trading will begin on a split-adjusted basis on March 19, 2015. Holders of class B and C common stock will not receive a stock dividend. Instead, the conversion rate
for class B common stock will increase to 1.6483 shares of class A common stock per share of class B common stock, and the conversion rate for class C common
stock will increase to 4.0 shares of class A

It doesn't matter that the stock is over $800 on a split adjusted basis.
The post was about what it did after the split.
The MasterCard foundation has been dumping share all last year and the share price was only up
$1.97 for the time period, while V was up $32.49 for the same period

    REPOSTED
The MA split/trade date was 1/22/2014 and the open was $82.21,
A tad over 1 year later the stock price is $84.18 (CLOSE 2/4/2015)
    That's an increase of $1.97 a share
    -
    Visa's open on 1/22/2014 $232.40 it's close on 2/4/2015 $264.89.
    That's an increase of $32.49 a share.
    -
If you sold 354 shares of Visa on 1/22/2014 and you bought 1000 MA shares after the split you made $1970.00.
If you kept the 354 shares of Visa you made 354 X $32.49 = $11,501.46

    buy before or after split

This is just my opinion but I would wait until it settles down after the split.
    -
There is a lot of call action on the stock now which is driving up the share price. P/E close to 30!!
As the split date gets closer you should see the stock start to pull back a bit because the "traders"
are moving on to the next trade.
I think we saw evidence of a trade pull back on Friday when the stock dropped $5 for no reason.
That was profit taking and it will happen again.
    -
I may add more myself after the split date but NOT a these inflated prices.
    My 2 cents Munchie

You can look all of this up on Yahoo historical price charts.
The MA split was 10 to 1 so the stock price was over $800.00 a share
    -
The MA split was announced 12/10/2013
During the time just before the split the stock went ABOUT $66.00
    -
The MA split/trade date was 1/22/2014 and the open was $82.21,
A tad over 1 year later the stock price is $84.18 (CLOSE 2/4/2015)
    That's an increase of $1.97 a share
So the question you should be asking is:
What did an investment in MA get you after 1 year?...NOT MUCH!!!!

    -
    interesting set of questions:
    -
The MA split was 10 to 1 so the stock price was over $800.00 a share
There was a run up to the split.
Look it up on the Yahoo historical price charts
    -
The MA split/trade date was 1/22/2014 and the open was $82.21,
A tad over 1 year later the stock price is $84.18 (CLOSE 2/4/2015)

    Compare this to a Visa:
    -
    Visa's open on 1/22/2014 $232.40 it's close on 2/4/2015 $264.89.
    That's an increase of $32.49 a share.
    -
If you sold 354 shares of Visa that day (1/22/2014) and you bought 1000 MA shares after the split you made $1970.00.
    -
If you kept the 354 shares of Visa you made 354 X $32.49 = $11,501.46
    -
I would not be a buyer of MA, stay with VISA...IMHO
    -
I am long Visa 5+ years.

    The split date is 3/18/2015
The first day you can trade the shares is 3/19/2015
You can verify that for yourself

  • cmdr_boom_boom cmdr_boom_boom Feb 1, 2015 8:18 AM Flag

Let's assume you own 1000 shares at $65 a share
    You invested $65 K
On March 19th, assuming you keep your shares, you will own 4000 shares of Visa.
    $65000.00/4000 = $16.25 share price
    -
How is a share price of $16.25 "irritating"?

in about 7 weeks the stock is going to be $70 or less which would make their target $78.
doesn't sound so impressive does it?

  • cmdr_boom_boom cmdr_boom_boom Jan 30, 2015 6:12 AM Flag

If memory serves after they spilt MA missed the QTR by 4 cents.
Also, MA lost the Chase account earlier that year so the stock was guided lower.
I think that was one of the reasons the stock did poorly.
You may see that lost account effect the MA results this year also the EURO exchange rate will have a bigger impact on MA than V.
    -
    Later in the year…
Visa and MA had to deal with Russia and sanctions. The market did not take that well, meaning it over reacted.
Visa and MA had to deal with the merchant lawsuits. The market did not take that well, meaning it over reacted.
If you look at a chart of both V and MA you will see they both traded in step, their chart patterns show similar peaks and troughs and later in the year both stocks broke out.
    -
I think Visa split this stock 4 for 1 so they didn’t have to keep going through the expense of splitting every few years. I’m not really happy about the size of the split but I think I understand why.
If you read through the PR and CC text I think you will see they are doing this because they expect the company to grow. If that is the case you now have 4 times as many shares in a great company.
    -
    Example
100 shares goes up $1 you get $100.00
    -
400 shares goes up $1 you get $400.00
BUT the rate on increase will be slower after the split than before.
    -
No one gets a free lunch in the universe.

the dividend will be cut in 1/2 just like the share price per share
    assuming it's a 2 for 1 split.
    I can still be a 20% increase but it's a 20% increase of a smaller amount

If you purchased 100 shares TODAY you have a higher percent of ownership in Visa than if you purchase 100 shares of Visa after the split.
That seems to me to be dilutive, you can call it whatever you like.

"They do say that a $60 price is more popular than $120."
Until they say it in a PR IT'S JUST AN EXAMPLE

There is a new proxy listed for Visa on it's web site.
It will answer all your questions about a Visa stock split.
The changes proposed in the last proxy should be approved 1/28/2015 at the shareholders meeting which will allow a stock split.
Based on an article I just read a 2 for 1 split is most likely and that makes sense to me.
I don't think you want to dilute the stock more than you have too.

AXP lost money on bad loans and they need to get their expenses in order.
Their sales went up and so will Visa's.
If you think what they said is bad news for Visa you are truly dumber than I have been giving you credit for

I don't believe Visa made a public statement that stated "VISA lowering it's next Earnings From $2.54 to $2.49"
Their NEXT earnings (3rd QTR) are $2.51 a share see yahoo estimates
If there has been a PR please tell me where to find it or I will be reporting you to Yahoo for posting false statements about Visa's earnings guidance.
    Thanks
