I'm not short, just pointing out this "Keystone XL" has taken on an identity of its own in the political theater, totally ignorant of current events and reality. Obama should sign off just to force the company to waste their money on starting it, only to desert it halfway through.

He would be doing TransCanada a favor. Phase 4 is not an economically viable project, its not needed and they know it. GOP is just going through the motions of delivering a campaign promise to big donors.

TransCanada owes Pres. Obama a Thank You letter for delaying this project. Nothing like finding out it is not viable in the middle of construction....

Think it's going to crash on earnings day?

There was accelerated "bonus" depreciation on business purchases of equipment (including Ag equipment) from 2008-2013. It wasn't renewed that I know of. I'm not a fan of infinite over-stimulus of the economy, it just makes the cycles that much more severe on the eventual downside.

richardred, I don't remember if I was on the asvi board much or what my "handle" may have been at the time. Quite a while ago. The MNTX ceo was previously an executive at TEX, and they have bought some small product lines from TEX in the past (Schaff and Loadking, maybe others). Suffice to say they are "in touch". I cut holdings in MNTX when the crane boom sales into gas drilling really slowed down. Now oil is following. I'd buy a deep dip in the stock again someday if I had the chance. I don't doubt the management at all I doubt the economic cycle for equipment right now.

At one time IR really had hot market-leading equipment lines but gave up market share and then folded their hand selling all the equipment lines like they were a plague. Oshkosh may be in a position to buy something again now but I have no idea what. They like the pure-play market leaders like they have (Pierce, JLG, McNeilus, Jerr-Dan). They sold Gradall didn't they?

Richard, I also owned some ASV stock back then and did pretty well on it. It was started by the same guy who started Polaris (Snowmobile track technology). When TEX acquired it the premium was 30%. The reason CAT was a 20% shareholder is because they used used the ASV tracks on their skid-loaders at the time. I always expected CAT would acquired them rather than someone else. This latest transaction isn't really make sense to me yet as a business strategy for either company. At that price MNTX should have been able to afford to buy the whole thing if TEX wanted rid of it. Maybe TEX approached MNTX wanting a stake in the company, and MNTX said give us something in return (besides Cash).

Does anyone know is MNTX issuing new shares to TEX, or is TEX buying that $20M on the open market? Judging by the stock's reaction I'd guess the former.

    What's going on?

They had pretty strong crane sales into the natural gas drilling industry, and then the move up drilling equipment to oil, that has all pretty much ground to a halt. That's my guess.

Moose, I'm going to guess you don't like losing 50% nor making 50% you'd bail when a stock was up 30%.

I don't know how many times I've bought stocks that fell 30-50%, before climbing 300%. That's just pretty typical for long-term investors in cyclical companies. Not a big deal if you have the stomach for it and do your DD. If you don't have the stomach for it, then you get all upset and flustered as evidence in your post. Some cycles just take longer to play out than others do. Emotionally it gets the best of a lot of people, riding it out. Many get discouraged and sell right here at the bottom. Then they forever hate stocks, the stock market, etc. and are doomed to sticking their money in CDs the rest of their life.
