  • NEW DELHI: Smartphone chipmaker MediaTek expects India to account for over 10 per cent share of its global shipments this year on the back of burgeoning handset sales in the country.

The Taiwanese firm's chipsets, which are used by companies like Micromax and Lava , will also power over 25 models of 4G VoLTE (voice-over-LTE) handsets in the coming months in India.

"India is an important part of our growth story. In 2015, we shipped 400 million chipsets for smartphones and over 33 million was from India. This year, we expect India to contribute over 10 per cent to the shipment as the adoption of 4G LTE grows in the country," MediaTek senior director and sales head of emerging markets Arthur Wang told PTI.

He added MediaTek shipped 160 million LTE chipsets in 2015, up from 40 million in the previous year, registering 4 times growth.

India is one of the world's fastest growing smartphone markets. According to a report by research firm Counterpoint, India smartphone market grew 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2016, surpassing the US to become the second largest country in terms of users.

This is despite the fact that global sales remained flat in the said period.

"Sales of 4G handsets is already growing in India. We are working with leading handset makers like Micromax, Lava, Karbonn , Lenovo and Lyf," he said.

Panel demand picking up, say IC firms
Cage Chao, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 13 May 2016]
Short lead-time orders for small-size panels are flowing in while orders for large-size panels have been picking up. Taiwan-based analog IC and LCD driver IC firms are expected to post revenue growth in the second quarter of 2016, according to industry sources.

The pull-in of orders coming from the panel industry is expected to persist through the third quarter, the sources said.

In the large-size panel sector, major LCD driver IC supplier Novatek Microelectronics recently remarked that its large-size panel driver IC segment is set to outperform its other product segments in terms of shipment growth in the second quarter.

  • Lightning EarPods

The first possibility and one of the most likely scenarios in my book: Apple bundles new Lightning EarPods with the iPhone 7. Apple could include EarPods of similar quality to the existing earbuds that come with iPhone, only with a Lightning connector in place of the standard 3.5mm headphone cable. We already have an idea of what that would look like as a few examples of these already exist on the market…

We took a look at JBL’s Reflect Aware a few months back, and they are currently backordered as one of the only earbud-style Lightning headphone options already available to order.

    Lightning-Earpods-JBL-Reflect

When connected over Lightning, the JBL’s use a companion app on the iPhone to allow for customizing of noise cancellation features and settings for ambient noise levels and EQ. If Apple is going to bundle its own Lightning EarPods, it could even have a new app or setting similar to JBL’s and other Lightning headphone makers in iOS 10.

There have been a few reports that Apple is planning to include new noise cancelling tech in iPhone 7 that could tie-in to Lightning headphones. One report back in January said it could use noise cancelling tech from Wolfson Microelectronics, the same place it’s already sending third-party Lightning headphone makers in its MFi program that need digital-to-analog converters. That report speculated that EarPods included with the iPhone likely won’t adopt the noise-canceling technology, but instead that Apple will sell a more expensive version of Lightning-connected EarPods with the tech separately.

  • MediaTek has found itself as the biggest competitor to Qualcomm. Currently, the San Diego, CA-based Qualcomm is the king in the mobile world, when it comes to processors. MediaTek wants to change that. And it looks like Intel Mobile Processors might be a part of that plan. In April, Intel announced that they were canceling their mobile processors, which effectively meant that they were leaving the mobile market altogether after spending a boatload on these mobile processors. MediaTek already has a pretty decent market share in some of the emerging markets and larger Asian markets like China and India. If they do acquire the mobile arm of Intel, they could be a whole lot more competitive with Qualcomm in the near future.
