My synthetic Uber long has always been a short on Avis/Hertz. I think others thought the same as they were highly correlated for a long time then diverged in Dec of 2015. In the last year, TAXI is unchanged not considering dividends (so up 11%) and Avis/Hertz are down almost 50%
Avis and Hertz have a combined $30B in debt load and about $1B in cash. Their debt is backed by used cars. So essentially they are used car salesmen. They are highly liquid and pay no dividend. Their short is a true play on Uber, not a short on TAXI.
Anyway, check out a 1 year chart of those 3 companies and see how they diverged.
which is the opposite of a "pump n dump". Bashers wrote dozens of articles on multiple sites with false premises and outright lies. Their shorting manipulated the share price much lower than it should be. They attacked an illiquid stock and were able to push it down. Now they are stuck because they need to cover to realize profits but their short position is so large they can not do so without raising the share price substantially
After writing the articles, the authors hid like cowards when their lies were discovered. I wonder if Barrons will do a follow up which could also be a trigger event.
your thesis on fair value is spot on. $11 +/- a little. But you have to account for the fact that there are 3M shorts who need to cover. An illiquid stock like this with so many shorts can go way above fair value. I have seen that point about 25% higher than you would normally think in other illiquid stocks. An illiquid stock like this should have never been a short candidate.
It's possible the next dividend in 2+ months will go from 25c to 26c or even higher. That could be the breaking point or trigger event.
for it to be a pump n dump, there has to be a pump part. Where is the pump? There is no PR's. No articles. No media campaign. There is no campaign on yahoo to spam TAXI on other boards.
This is simply the short and steady short covering due to the failed thesis on the part of the shorts. You lost. Get over it.

if you look at the 5 day chart, you can literally see a straight line upwards that is slow and steady indicating short covering. If you continue outward in time to the ex-div day, it goes right to $10. That's all I did to arrive at that number
fun fact - the next ex-div day will only be two months from this one. TAXI spreads their year end one out by 4 months. So this is the max pain time period for shorts
