I hope so too! Intel doesn't compete, intel donates as usual money for not to buy competing products and calls it "contra revenue" or "advertising funds".

    IBM buying AMD for $6

    AMD did beat IBM !
"At this point, IBM is practically the only company using its own Power chips. In the past, it was able to sell them to game console manufacturers like Sony , Nintendo , and Microsoft MSFT -0.28%, but in
the last round lost that business to Advanced Micro Devices AMD -3.31% (AMD)."
To save IBM's reputation and to be further recognized as an important global player IBM has to buy AMD !

There is no way that hundreds of millions intel cpu license fees are worth as much as AMD is selling.
There is again no way that intel is hurting AMD to do business with AMD customers with billions of intel "contra revenue" and "subsidies" former called bribery e.g of one billion payments to dell.
intel will loose the right to use AMD IP or will have to pay the same amount for every cpu sold as AMD will have to pay!

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

  • Lisa, don't let intel earn billions with AMD patents !!!

  • at benzinga
"Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) reported its third quarter earnings. Shares of the company are up 4 percent.

Below are some key highlights from its conference call.

    • While our Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment had a strong quarter.
    • We did face some challenges in our Computing and Graphics business due to ongoing weakness in the consumer PC market.
    • We know what we need to do to improve performance going forward and are taking the appropriate actions

    • Our Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment delivered sequential and year-over-year revenue and operating profit improvement.
    • We had strong embedded processor revenue growth and secured multiple new design wins across our priority markets.
    • For instance Arista, a leader in software-driven cloud networking, began ramping production of new switches powered by our Embedded G-Series SoC.
    • Our customers also began ramping a number of new retail and educational digital signage wins in the third quarter.
    • Our work to lead the industry's transition to 64-bit ARM servers also gained momentum in the quarter.
    • Design work for these opportunities has started and we anticipate first silicon revenue in 2016.
    • We met our goal to double our commercial client design wins from last year and are pleased with the initial progress we are making to build a richer mix in our PC business.
    • New commercial client offerings from Dell, HP and Lenovo have started ramping resulting in approximately a 50% increase in our commercial APU shipments from the second quarter.
    • And in the professional graphics market, we believe this remains an area where we see the opportunity for ongoing growth.
    • In the third quarter, channel sales increased sequentially and we secured several new design wins with Dell and HP that will reach market early next year.
    • Although we increased overall desktop processor unit shipments from the previous quarter, our ..."

  • Rory Reed transition was planned

Ever since we learned Rory Read was stepping down and Lisa Su was taking over as AMD CEO, we were on a mission to find out what was behind the company's decision and timing.

After some research and inquiries with multiple sources we can confirm that the transition was not rushed and forced. It was a planned transition and it was in the works for a while. Rory was brought in to restructure AMD and prepare the company for the future, as the long-term strategy set by Dirk Meyer was not working as expected. AMD has fallen behind Intel and the company's prospects were affected by delays and execution issues.

Rory's key job was to stop the slide and get AMD back to profitability and that is exactly what he did. Many of his decisions were not popular but they worked. A source has told us that Lisa Su was groomed to become the new CEO of AMD.

Lisa understands products and this is something that company like AMD needs. This brings back memories of Microsoft's CEO search and the time it was trying to get Ford CEO Alan Mulally. Bill Gates insisted with the board that they choose an in-house, tech savvy candidate. The press felt more confident about AMD with Dirk Meyer at the helm than Rory Reed, but Read is an operations exec rather than a techie.

Lisa has a better understanding of technology as she has an engineering background. She knows that time to market and better execution are crucial for the future of AMD. She was groomed for the CEO position from the day she joined the company and it was obvious that this will take place in case she did well. Guess what, she did well and as a result Su is now taking over. We also hear that there will be some more radical changes at AMD over the next few months.

We still don’t know why AMD chose to announce Lisa Su's promotion a week before its financial conference call, but since the call takes place on the 16th, or tomorrow, we should know soon enough.

  • Taking over more business over from Nvidia

Since last month we have been hearing that AMD has nested quite well in Apple, which used Nvidia GPUs in recent years.

AMD started the infiltration with last year's Mac Pro that currently ships solely with AMD professional GPUs and on the 16th of October Apple is expected to introduce a iMac 27 with a 5120x2880 panel powered by an AMD GPU.

This is a significant win for AMD, but the real winner is Intel since most Apple notebooks will continue using integrated Intel HD or Iris graphics. Only a few iMac and Macbooks are using Nvidia Geforce 700 generation GPUs, but this might change as well. The iMac 27 with its 5120x2880 panel will be the highest resolution All-in-One on the market and having GPUs in two unique machines, the iMac 27 5K and Mac Pro, is a huge technological and psychological win for AMD. Intel Iris Pro is enough to run most Macbook computers, but for anything serious, a proper discrete GPU is still the king.

We are not sure what Nvidia did to upset Apple, but this round of devices will be powered either by Intel integrated graphics or AMD discrete graphics. The only thing that comes to mind is that Nvidia might have approached to Apple about royalties for their GPU IP and Apple didn’t like it, but this is just speculation.
