I think that Buffett comment was in regards to the US stock market as a whole, not on an individual basis.
Buffett never sits on company stock when the company fundamentals deteriorate.
Oil has always had it's boom and bust cycles. And yes, it has always come back, while shedding some of the weaker players who tried to grow to fast and were careless with their finances.
I really doubt that SDRL would have been the type of play that would have interested Buffett.

The bottom is reached when business conditions have hit there lows and stabilized.

And sometimes the damage is severe enough that the entity is no more than a shell of it's former self.
