Sentiment: Strong Buy
Seadrill is one of the largest names in energy equipment. And until last year, it was also one of the largest dividend-paying stocks in the world.
As of last summer, it paid out a massive 11.5% dividend yield.
So, when its CEO reassured investors about the company's ability to keep paying that rate ... despite a slowdown in equipment sales ... they listened.
They'll 'Keep Paying' ... but for How Long?
During his second-quarter's conference call last year, CEO Per Wullf said:
"We also have [the] strongest financial position in our history and have decided to maintain the dividend of $1 per share. We expect to be able to support this dividend level for [the] foreseeable future."
Unfortunately for investors, the foreseeable future was short-lived.
Just three months after making that statement, Seadrill suspended its dividend.
So, that 11.5% yield investors were enjoying — that they were promised — evaporated completely.
To make sure you don't fall into a trap like this, you need to push past the rhetoric.
It's down 38.52 % from PPS when I bought___ I think that gives me the right to call this a DOG!!! I hope I live long enough for the dividend to bring me back even... Thank God that I bought a large amount of ALDW and NTI at the same time...
I see that your just reporting the news brought two thumbs down___ I think maybe that some of the folks on this board are not the sharpest knives in the drawer...
