Well the "basic" engine design is from the manufacturer except for toyota.

Last I heard an engine goes for 70k+ so no they don't come from a mfr's
    assembly line.

Yea, I wish they were more "stock" too.

To clarify, all nascar cup cars run push rod engines.

    Chevy runs a base Chevy.

    Ford runs a base Ford.

Toyota, when they wanted to start in nascar, didn't have a push rod so nascar allowed them to copy the mopar small block. Which they still run.

"Sponge-like’ Silicon May Mean Major Advance In Battery Technology"

"For years, manufacturers have used graphite for one of the electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, but have hankered for a way to replace graphite with silicon, which can hold 10 times more energy.

Yet there’s a snag: Silicon swells when it holds a charge. Give it too much juice and it explodes."

Again, place 1st quote into google.

(..."but I was unable to find the original. No one is talking about the methodology they used to estimate 53.3 years.")

    John, wngr,

Try: Put the 1st quote in my post "BP’s Latest Estimate Says World’s Oil Will Last 53.3 Years” in google.

    Pick the “Oil Price…” link.

At the start of the 2nd paragraph click on “annual report”.

"BP’s Latest Estimate Says World’s Oil Will Last 53.3 Years" (Oil price... ;13Jul14)

"BP’s annual report on proved global oil reserves says that as of the end of 2013, Earth has nearly 1.688 trillion barrels of crude, which will last 53.3 years at current rates of extraction. This figure is 1.1 percent higher than that of the previous year. In fact, during the past 10 years proven reserves have risen by 27 percent, or more than 350 billion barrels."

"BP says Asia-Pacific oil reserves will last only 14 years at current rates. That means China will have to keep importing oil, putting further strain on global reserves."

["Well, here's my spin...I think you're just a mean, bitter old man. I don't know or care why, but you seem to have a negative view of everything. Too bad."]

I've referred to him as a "Nattering nabob of negativism" a couple of times in years past.

    (Thx W S.)

["Only thing is I don't think they ever offered an automatic transmission in them."]

I never heard of a stock auto S2000. The engines were winders not torquers so I don't
think that is what rdh had in mind.

Miata's are great driving cars, had autos and are old enough to be inexpensive.

["I rarely post here now (there's no arguing with stupid)..."] Is "stupid" singular or plural?

["This whole recall fiasco is a potential blessing in disguise. M.Barra has a golden opportunity to clean house thoroughly and truly establish a "New GM." Should she succeed (I believe she will), GM stands to earn a much higher level of respect in the auto market and investment community."]

My thoughts also! I really do hope she succeeds!

Ps: I succumbed and now own GM.

["My thoughts exactly. Is it the switch that is defective or the driver behind the wheel??"]

    Steph, et al:

Hey, I posted this back in APR: {"Okay, I was driving an '05 Malibu home, not subject to the ign recall as far as I know, decided to experiment. At 45+ I turned the ignition off and applied the brakes 3 times to slow down to turn 90 degrees into my drive, where I applied them the 4th time and stopped.

    Brakes worked normally and had power assist on every application (4). The electric power steering was harder to turn than normal, I think harder than a non PS car. About like a 60's/70's non power steering pickup (subjective of course). Make of it what you will."}

{"Unless you're trying to set a record going down Lombard street I don't see the problem with steering or brake. Of course I learned to drive in a non ps/pb car and it wasn't till my 4th car that I got ps/pb.
    Also in those days it wasn't unusual for a car to stall especially in the winter, even while moving."}

Ergo, even if the engine shuts off I don't see a problem for a competent driver.

That said, the switch should not have been accepted if it did not meet the stated GM specs. That was
incompetence. As was changing the design without changing the p/n.

The attitude of GM top management appears to have changed for the better, hopefully so did that of NHTSA.

["Now NHTSA thinks every car made has a defective ignition switch."]

How dare the NHTSA investigate, they should rely on someone from the company management to tell them.

["Oh, and at the same time, he regularly hawked gold as gold declined by more than 30%. Still, he'll tell you he was right about that, too."]

Speaking of which, the price of gold has just done a "death cross". Strange our "chartists" didn't mention that.

["... a subject matter that, in your mind you think you know."]

Wouldn't that include every subject in the known universe?
