It's bitumen, not heavy crude.
Supposedly most of the pipeline will be buried -- I wonder how they will heat it enough to keep it moving.
Yes, when Reagan was inaugurated, the US was a net exporting nation. When he left, the US was a net importer. As manufacturing was shipped to the Far East, all those good paying jobs went with it.
The biggest employment sector is no longer manufacturing, but finance, followed by health care.
The beneficiaries of moving Canadian tar across our country are the Koch Brothers, currently responsible for mounds of petcoke blowing around large cities in America's Midwest.
The Kochs have been operating in Alberta so long that "Koch Alberta" is the name for a grade of oil.

The 97% Consensus is a Robust Result
Nevertheless, the existence of the expert consensus on human-caused global warming is a reality, as is clear from an examination of the full body of evidence. For example, Naomi Oreskes found no rejections of the consensus in a survey of 928 abstracts performed in 2004. Doran & Zimmerman (2009) found a 97% consensus among scientists actively publishing climate research. Anderegg et al. (2010) reviewed publicly signed declarations supporting or rejecting human-caused global warming, and again found over 97% consensus among climate experts. Cook et al. (2013) found the same 97% result through a survey of over 12,000 climate abstracts from peer-reviewed journals, as well as from over 2,000 scientist author self-ratings, among abstracts and papers taking a position on the causes of global warming.
In addition to these studies, we have the National Academies of Science from 33 different countries all endorsing the consensus. Dozens of scientific organizations have endorsed the consensus on human-caused global warming. Only one has ever rejected the consensus - the American Association of Petroleum Geologists - and even they shifted to a neutral position when members threatened to not renew their memberships due to its position of climate denial.
In short, the 97% consensus on human-caused global warming is a robust result, found using several different methods in various studies over the past decade. It really shouldn't be a surprise at this point, and denying it is, well, denial.
Read about the results of the West Coast Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia Science Panel at the far from left-wing Oregon State University.
"Mysteriously, the chart only began in 1988" Not really mysterious:
"Scientists working on the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program have been making repeated observations of the hydrography, chemistry and biology of the water column at a station north of Oahu, Hawaii since October 1988."
Cuba produces huge numbers of doctors, far more than it could ever support with its 11 million people. But, thanks to renewing diplomatic ties with Cuba, we will be able to draw off their surplus to treat low-income Americans.
The Romneys earned $21.6 million in 2010 and paid $3 million in income taxes. More than half of the former Massachusetts governor’s earnings were considered capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at a top rate of 15 percent rather than the 35 percent top rate for ordinary income.
And, by the same token, whatever you tax, you get less of.
Leeches like Mitt Romney pay less tax on their unearned income than the average Joe pays for what he earns by the sweat of his brow.
If we want to encourage working for a living, we need to match the tax for unearned income to the rates for earned income.
Huh. One report I read said the woman killed the intruder herself. I wonder who really did it (breaking news is often inaccurate.)
The Memphis newspaper is behind a savage paywall.
David Cameron is a Conservative. But Conservative mismanagement of universal health care doesn't have to be.
Compare how well Israel's socialist quadripayer healthcare works, under their hard right leader Netanyahu.
Use of force proportionate to the crime committed would have eliminated the perceived need to protest. Peddling without a license should not be punished with death. Walking in the middle of the road is not a life or death matter, nor is canoodling in a stairwell.
When it comes to firearms, whatever reasoning ability liberals have flies right out the window. Even the term, "gun violence"irrationally implies that lumps of metal have free will. Suicides are counted as victims of "gun violence." Yet nobody described Robin Williams as the victim of "clothing violence." Nor were the unfortunates who stepped in front of a Caltrain described as victims of "transit violence." Why not? Because it would be absurd to speak as if clothes or commute trains could commit violent acts.
Are we talking about the Saudi Arabia whose Bin Laden family were best buddies with George HW Bush?
The gun that the three-time felon used to kill the two NYPD members sitting innocently in their squad, eating their lunch, was last legally sold in 1996, by a Georgia pawnshop, to "an Asian man". For some reason, all the background check laws and closed gun show loopholes were enough to prevent this bad guy from getting a gun.
The killer was a Maryland resident who shot his girlfriend and took the bus to NYC. This was not legally possible:
1. By federal law, a resident of a state can buy a handgun only within his own state. (Out of state sales are possible through a FFL holder in the state of residence)
2. By Maryland law, a handgun is a regulated firearm, and a person who is not a regulated firearms dealer may not sell, rent, transfer, or purchase any regulated firearm without going through a regulated firearms dealer. Alternatively, the prospective seller/transferor and prospective buyer/transferee may complete the transaction through a designated law enforcement agency. Either way, the killer would have had to face a background check.
3. The killer violated two more laws by shooting his gf and by boarding a bus with his handgun: It is unlawful for any person without a permit to wear or carry a handgun, openly or concealed, upon or about his person. It is also unlawful for any person to knowingly transport a handgun in any vehicle traveling on public roads, highways, waterways or airways, or upon roads or parking lots generally used by the public.
