  • Neither one will be good for shareholders holding RNDY paper, however I do NOT see either a Spinoff or Merger Arbitrage scenario being done through a BK. There are simply too many complications of a BK in todays market. Where would the financing come from commonly known as D.I.P. (Debtor in Posession) financing? D.I.P financing enables the corporation to operate while it is restructuring under the terms of bankruptcy. D.I.P. financing is currently not available in todays market. Tom

  • I would find it hard to believe J.P. Morgan is still holding 1.9M/sh. or 3.92% of the float, also on the Mutual Fund side that Vanguard is still holding 601K/sh. or a 1.21% of the float, as the companies last 2 qrtrs. have been such a disappointment with weak guidance going foward. Tom

I hope Mariano's has plans i.e. the $$$ to convert to credit and debit cards readers capable of reading these cards embedded with the EMV chip ( Europay, MasterCard and Visa), known as IC or Chip Cards. Mariano's will be left in the dust as close as the Holiday season as banks and retailers are rapidly distributing these cards to their card holders, also major retailers Walmart for one, are moving aggressively to install these EMV readers in their stores. We all remember Target last Holiday season. Tom

  • The Frankfort Mariano's has gained a huge win. The SOM (Store Operating Manager) from Park Ridge was just promoted to the assistant store director position at the Mariano's Frankfort location. IMO you were the best SOM Mariano's ever had and you deserve this promotion. I.m sure the numbers coming from the Frankfort Mariano's will be very impressive. Congrats and GL! Tom

    Mariano's and Pick visits

Dj: Arlington Heights and Vernon Hills Mariano's will always have a special spot in my heart regardless of how the bathrooms are. I did stop by the Park Ridge Mariano's last week one day after one of my shfts at Lutheran General Hospital . It was a nice store. I talked to some store management, a department manager I knew from AH and VH. Nice to see them again. Everyone I run into who are still working for Mariano's that were there from the good old days always ask, "What are you doing now?" I tell them, "I'm a volunteer at Lutheran General Hosptal". " "Why don't you come back to work here" is the normal reply. Anyway the meat and seafood dept. in Park Ridge looked great. I told the manager a young guy, "Good Job your case looks great!" I don't care how old someone is as long as the job is getting done. He told me he thought he had a level three opening.....we left it at that. On a different note my father is now 84 and of course has some health issues however he loves Mariano's pecan rolls from the bakery in Bucktown. He told me Saturday, "Mariano's has the best pecan rolls (full of pecans) and there only a dollar each but there the ones in the case" I guess I'll be stopping by the Bucktown store before heading over to see Mom and Dad who live very close in an independent living facility. We'll see what this week brings for RNDY. Tom

Thanks DJ: Great post. You hit on major problems I still see prevalent at Mariano's stores. It's not what you make it's what you keep. Tom

    ZACKS Downgrade of RNDY.....$3.70

chevelleecar648: My question to you would be are you really cost averaging if the stock hits the $2's or would you just have more shares which would go to $0.00 in the event of a BK? If RNDY does hit the $2's it's just a spec play in my book which I called the stock after Q1 earnings when the stock dropped 25% the next day to $4.80 from $6.46. Tom

DJ: I shorted RNDY from $7 to $4 however I have not put a penney into a BUY execution as of yet too much uncertaintity for me. I believe Mariano's is doing just fine with $900k to $1M gross sales per store, per week. The problem for me is how Mariano's is going to seperate from Roundy's? Bk would be the easiest route or a best case scenario would be an aquisition of Mariano's. The story is still being written. Tom

  • On 8/11 Zacks downgraded Roundys (RNDY) to Underperform new P.T. $3.70 Tom

Sir: I am like yourself retired. I had a great career as a jet mechanic for United Airlines at O'Hare. I then went into retail grocery specializing in meat and seafood reaching a solid level 3 as far as product knowledge, sanitation, cross contamination, and most important I had a good following of customers while at Mariano's as I provided excellent customer service. I come home now after my several weekly shifts of volunteer work at Lutheran General, many days as tired as when I was working the counter for Mariano's. I have a much different feeling when I unwind on my couch after work. There is so much good in this world that most people don't realize. There are so many people faced with real adversity in their lives that they not only deal with their own life problems however they also reach out to comfort others. A lady today dropped off 50 teddy bears for pediatrics on the second floor after I discharged her young son suffering from a mulitude of serious health problems. You are correct when someone learns what is really important in life? To me it is life itself and how really precious it is. Why do we spend so much time fighting? What a waste. I commend you for your work with Childrens Hospital and St. Jude. You are a good man. This is all I'll ever say about this subject on this board. Thank You to those of you that took the time to read my very personal message. Peace, Tom

    Bloated and overloaded labor

Thanks DJ for the insight. We probably could have a constructive conversation on the retail food sector. Today however I'm off to work as a volunteer at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge IL. Mariano's has a store in Park Ridge I have not visited yet maybe I'll stop in after work today. Lutheran General Hospital has 800 volunteers and we all work at a pretty good clip, beleive me! My gosh could you imagine if retail in general had that option? $$$ Tom

FYI: Meijer stores has one store director, one shift manager, and one manager for each department, along with just enough associates who stay busy all day and night. I know they have a great balance sheet with very good margins which I won't disclose here. Tom

DJ: Wow, and for me to think there is still an excessive waste of non- producers at the store level of Mariano's. You just opened up another can of corporate worms I was unaware of. Thanks, Tom

No Insider Buying With Stock In The Toilet?

Thank You Chevelle and DJ: I respect a few opinions on this board and you both bring good insight. I talk to and e-mail several associates and management from #8501 and #8502 Mariano's. Some are still with the company more are not. We all REALLY believed in this company and busted our butts while we were with Mariano's and those that still are. You both probably have heard all the theories. I'll just say the morale in Wisconsin must be a train wreck, Chevelle. Believe me it is not a whole lot better at Mariano's. DJ: I agree Mariano's has too many associates or if Mariano's wants all these assciates everyone has to be on the same page as we all were in the early days of the company. Many are not trained well, many are lazy not trying to both present the products at the highest level Mariano's is trying to sell and too many standing around talking or #$%$ about the company leading to terrible customer service. Sometimes I feel like telling an associate "Hey that person on the other side of the counter is paying you every week, show some interest or swipe out and go home" Maybe AlixPartners can turn the clock back to how we were in the early days of Mariano's #8501 and #8502. chevellecar648: Here is what's bugging me. 1) The CFO Karst leaving for Rite Aid 2) The partnering with AlixPartners, somehow in my opinion Mariano's is going to get spun off here. I'm just not sure how it's going to go down. A BK would wipe out Roundys shareholders.....Correct? 3) I was in the Vernon Hills Mariano's on a very recent visit and there was a new store director in training who came from Target, Bucktown also has Target management in training (SOM). This on the surface tells me Mariano's is not going anywhere however Roundys probably is not in the cards? I find it hard to believe AlixPartners is only here to increase productivity and change the way Mariano's does business. Bob Mariano has been in retail grocery his whole life. Tom

  • Good buying opportunity Chairman Bob.......Unless you know something we don't. Hmmmmm Tom

  • As a retiree of United airlines this story of C.O.D. sounds all too familiar. UAL was on a Cash basis for fuel. It's ironic that United and Mariano's are both Chicago stories, and I worked for both....Maybe it's me:)

  • I stopped in the Arlington Heights Mariano's on Friday. I couldn't believe that the best Seafood Specialist I ever worked with and trained under has now left and gone to Heinemann's. Produce in Vernon Hills has lost a fantastic associate to Jewel. Meat and Seafood in Vernon Hills has lost another great associate to The Fresh Market. I'm out of retail....for now, working as a volunteer at Lutheran General Hospital, just covering on a sizeable short position. Mariano's has to take notice that excellent in the the trenches associates don't come along every day. I see no reason to initiate a long position in the stock (RNDY) at this time. Tom

I did not go Long. I just covered my short position. It has been a very good run for me starting with the Q1 earnings or lack thereof. GLTA!! Tom
