EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The future of 4K Ultra HD received a rocket-propelled boost today with the launch of a DIRECTV satellite that will deliver the new standard in TV image quality directly to viewers’ homes in the U.S., along with more HD for local markets and backup for DIRECTV’s existing fleet of six HD satellites.
DIRECTV 14, a nearly seven-ton spacecraft, designed and built by Space Systems/Loral, soared into space following its successful launch today at 12:40 p.m. PT from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle by Arianespace. Controllers at the ground station at Hassan, India made contact with the satellite 28 minutes into the launch and confirmed that all systems are functioning properly.
When the satellite begins operations in early second quarter of next year, it will be the first commercial satellite to use the Reverse Band Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) spectrum, providing additional capacity for the delivery of more 4K Ultra HD programming and other advanced services to DIRECTV customers across America including Alaska and Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

I've seen countless people complaining about wanting to get it but they can't get DirecTV where they are located - now they won't have to. DirecTV will pay an average of $1.5 billion annually in the eight-year NFL Sunday Ticket deal, according to reports. That pact lets DirecTV offer Sunday Ticket on mobile devices and over broadband.

I see two benefits to buying DirecTV.
(1) They increase their number of "cable" subscribers from 5 million to 43 million. That will give them the economies of scale and negotiating leverage for media content. Right now they don't have the economies of scale to be able to compete with a company like Comcast for media. After DirecTV they will.
(2) Out of the 38 million DirectV subscribers 18 million of those are in Mexico. AT&T just bought Iusacell the third largest wireless in Mexico. Also America Movil which has 70% of the wireless market in Mexico is being forced to sell off assets until it only has 50% of the market. It just so happens that AT&T is really the only company positioned to take advantage of this. The other bidders for those assets like Softbank have already given up on it because they see AT&T's position is too strong already.
The way I see it the DirecTV acquisition is just as much about expansion into Mexico and South America as it is about the US "cable" market. The US market is pretty saturated but Mexico and South America is a different story. Many of those countries have increasing standards of living and population growth. There are still a lot of under served markets down there. AT&T needs to grow and it isn't going to be possible in the US, at least as far as wireless goes. The DirecTV deal is a good path to growth. It is not perfect, but it is a way to get their foot into the door.

Most of the programming is Spanish-language content at this time, but the service itself is in Spanish and English, and Yaveo’s help pages promise English-language subtitles to be added at some point in the future. The service is currently available on the web as well as on Android, but DirecTV promises to bring it to iOS as well as connected TV platforms like the Xbox, Chromecast and Roku soon.

DirecTV has been working on Yaveo internally for at least a year; the service is internally known as HOTT, or “Hispanic OTT.” For the satellite TV service operator, Yaveo is a first of what could eventually become a whole bouquet of online streaming services focused on niche audiences, something the company’s chief revenue officer Paul Guyardo alluded to in Yaveo’s launch press release, which quoted him saying:
“Yaveo gets DIRECTV into the OTT business and we’re excited to start with a compelling Spanish-language service targeted to the Hispanic community We’ll learn a great deal, use the findings to grow and improve the Yaveo platform and expand our OTT offering over time.”
This focus on the niche bodes well for DirecTV’s proposed merger with AT&T, which itself is targeting the niche for its online TV plans. AT&T and the Chernin Group have jointly earmarked $500 million for Otter Media, the niche-focused online video joint-venture that now owns the majority of both Fullscreen and Crunchyroll.

DirecTV launches its Latino streaming service Yaveo

DirecTV soft-launched its Latino streaming service Yaveo Monday, offering three live TV feeds channels as well some 2700 hours of on-demand content for $7.99 per month. Yaveo operates completely separate from DirecTV, meaning that subscribers won’t have to have an existing satellite TV subscription to access any of the content.
Yaveo’s live line-up comes from Hola TV, BeIn Sports and Cine Sony Television, and the service’s on-demand content is being supplied by Univision, MTV, Cine Sony Television, Caracol, TMN, Nick en Español, Canal Once and others. Gigaom readers will recognize many of those names: I’ve been following Yaveo closely over the last couple of months, revealing both its name and key details of its programming-line up before it was officially announced.
"Iusacell gives us a unique opportunity to create the first-ever North American Mobile Service area covering over 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States," AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said in a statement when the deal was announced. "It won't matter which country you're in or which country you're calling -- it will all be one network, one customer experience."
Another 8.6 customers. AT&T, just buy it and forget about it.
Mexican regulators OK AT&T's $2.5B deal for carrier Iusacell

AT&T has gotten the green light from Mexican regulators for its $2.5 billion purchase of Iusacell, the No. 3 wireless carrier in Mexico.
AT&T will be the first US carrier to offer wireless service outside of the US.
Reuters reported Sunday that Mexico's Federal Competition Commission approved the deal with certain conditions put on the transaction to "avoid risks to the process of competition" where Iusacell competes with America Movil, Mexico's largest wireless network, which is run by billionaire Carlos Slim Helu. AT&T sold off its minority stake in America Movil this past summer to win regulatory approval for its acquisition of satellite TV provider DirecTV.
Iusacell had been operated as a joint venture between Mexico's biggest broadcaster Televisa and Grupo Salinas.
Once the deal is finalized, AT&T will have access to Iusacell's network and its 8.6 million wireless customers. Iusacell's network covers roughly 70 percent of Mexico's population. AT&T has said it plans to use the Iusacell network to create a North American "mobile service area" that will cover its AT&T customers in the US as well as Iusacell's customers in Mexico.
If the deal closes, it will be the first time a US wireless operator has offered service outside its home country.

Under the deal, DirecTV customers will have access to live linear feeds and VOD content from all ESPN and Disney cable networks and ABC owned and operated TV stations. Other new servicesinclude Fusion, Longhorn Network, ESPN Goal Line and ESPN Buzzer Beater. DirecTV customers will also have access to select content across Disney/ESPN/ABC channels,and ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network, ESPN3, and SEC Network’s digital platform, SEC Network +.
Continuing services under the agreement include ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS and SEC Network In addition, ESPN Classic will be reintroduced as a VOD service. The companies also renewed carriage agreement for ABC’s eight owned local stations, including WABC-TV in New York City, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, WLS-TV in Chicago, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, KGO-TV in San Francisco, WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham, KTRK-TV in Houston, and KFSN in Fresno.
