Strong demand sends jet fuel soaring

The spot price of jet fuel delivered in New York harbour rose 1.5 per cent to $3.127 per gallon on Tuesday. The move followed a US Labor Day holiday weekend when the number of passengers was expected to rise 2 per cent on the year to 14m, according to Airlines for America, a trade group.

Jet fuel now trades at a sizeable premium to New York diesel futures, whose October contract was $2.8073 per gallon early on Tuesday. Diesel has fallen about 10 per cent in the past month.

More puzzling to traders, the price of jet fuel delivered along the US Gulf of Mexico has in recent days fetched a premium to the benchmark New York diesel futures. This is unusual because the Gulf coast, as the centre of the US refining industry, is normally awash in jet fuel.

The jump comes as US jet fuel consumption rebounds to volumes last recorded before the financial crisis and approaches the buoyant demand that preceded the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001. At American Airlines, the world’s largest passenger carrier, fuel consumption rose 1.8 per cent to 1.8bn gallons in the first half of 2014.

US refineries flush with crude from shale formations have also been exporting more jet fuel to destinations from Canada to Nigeria. Inventories of jet fuel have dwindled to less than 35m barrels, the least in a decade.

“The world is becoming increasingly dependent upon jet fuel made in the US,” said Ben Brockwell of the Oil Price Information Service.

The high price of jet fuel in part reflects congestion on refined products pipelines bringing the fuel to major airports in markets such as New York and Chicago. “There’s a lot of competition for that space
