...shares can't be shorted yet. Nobody wants to buy right after such a reverse split, and shorts are just licking their chops in anticipation. Volume will pick up dramatically once SYNM is shortable. If you're long, I'd use this grace period to bail out soon.

There's no mystery here. Stop looking for a conspiracy explanation. The drug caused injury & death, the company depends on this one & only drug, hence the company is circling the drain (the drain being bankruptcy). Unless something develops to bring Omontys back from the trash bin, Affymax is done. That's it. One might question how things got this far and whether there was manipulation of the trial data, but that's academic at this point.
